Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer

It is used by the database team to monitor and tune database performance in both SQL Server and Azure Databases. Slow databases, timeouts on websites and in services and applications, can frequently be caused by the data layer, and this is the best tool I've ever used for troubleshooting that.
  • Tells you which statements in which stored procedures need work or are catastrophic (if that applies).
  • Helps you focus attention on what really needs work, very efficiently.
  • The UI gets clunky if you have lots of servers to monitor.
  • It doesn't really rank problems across multiple servers.
  • Not my current employer, but a previous one. We had a deployment of a large amount of code, including numerous database changes. The next day, everything that depended on that database server was down and the server was slammed to 100% CPU, RAM, and I/O. It would have been very difficult to identify exactly what was wrong, but it took only seconds to pull up Database Performance Analyzer and find the exact problem, and then less than a minute to patch the exact proc that had a problem. The whole company was locked out of business-critical sites and tools, and it could have taken hours to analyze the issue by means like traces, DMVs, etc. Instead, it took almost no time at all.
Spotlight SQL Monitor. Spotlight is (in my opinion) better for monitoring general database and server issues. DPA is better (the best) at identifying performance issues.

Yes

Would you buy SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer again?

Yes

It works really well if you either have a limited number of servers or if you are focusing your attention on a small number. If you have a ton of micro-databases, it's not going to be the best option.
