These products increase efficiency by enabling marketers to send out large batches of emails at once (e.g. promotional emails or newsletters), also referred to as ‘blast emails’, instead of requiring an individual to manually send each email. Email marketing tools also allow marketers to create segmented email lists, keep track of email subscribers, send out triggered emails, and set up email marketing campaigns sequences. Some products also include personalization capabilities that allow marketers to customize messages based on subscriber demographics or behavior. Other common email marketing software features include a drag and drop or HTML email editor, email templates, email A/B testing, email drip campaigns, CRM integration, and campaign reporting and analytics.
One thing to keep in mind when selecting an email marketing tool is that there may be some overlap between these products and marketing automation software. Both include email marketing capabilities, however, marketing automation software includes features that extend beyond managing email marketing campaigns. Activities like lead management, lead scoring, social media campaigns, and web analytics are things that are typically covered by marketing automation software. On the other hand, email marketing tools may include some degree of automation, but their primary focus is helping marketers design, send out, and manage email campaigns.

Reviewers note that the ability to A/B test email content, easy to use templates, and ability to automate email workflows are some of Emma’s key strengths.

ActiveCampaign is an email marketing solution that enables users to automate the process of sending out various types of emails (e.g. broadcast, triggered, targeted, autoresponse, and scheduled emails) to their subscribers. It includes features such as unlimited sending, email templates, Split testing of email content, list segmentation, dynamic content, reporting and analytics, and integrations with popular third-party applications such as Facebook, Shopify, and Paypal. A large majority of ActiveCampaign users (75%) on TrustRadius are from small businesses. Two things reviewers highlight about ActiveCampaign are its ability to easily automate email campaigns and its affordability.

SendGrid Marketing Email is a marketing campaign platform that allows users to design messages using a drag and drop editor and build custom templates using HTML. It includes features such as list segmentation, email A/B testing, flexible campaign workflows, email personalization tools, and real-time email campaign analytics. Most SendGrid users (89%) on TrustRadius are from small businesses. According to reviewers, SendGrid has a robust API and is well suited for sending both transactional and marketing emails.

From Oracle, Bronto is a marketing platform specifically designed for eCommerce companies. It includes common email marketing features such as a drag and drop editor for building campaigns, advanced list segmentation tools, email reporting and analytics, and email A/B testing. Bronto also offers eCommerce-specific capabilities like the ability to browse abandonment emails, commerce data integration, abandoned cart emails, transactional emails, and provide customers with personalized recommendations. Reviewers note that the easy to use interface and ability to integrate with any eCommerce engine are two benefits of using Bronto.

Mailchimp is a free marketing platform ideal for small to midsize businesses. Mailchimp offers marketers a wide range of email marketing, automation, personalization, and eCommerce tools, with premium plan options available. It includes features such as email campaign management, a landing page builder, list segmentation, email A/B testing, CRM integration, reporting and analytics, abandoned cart emails, product recommendations, and order notification emails. One unique service Mailchimp offers is the ability to send printed postcards to customers in 27 countries including the US. A large portion of Mailchimp users (46%) on TrustRadius are from small businesses. According to reviewers, out-of-the-box email templates and list management are two of Mailchimp’s strengths.

There are multiple ways to create or add to lists – names and email addresses can be added manually; a csv file can be uploaded and integrated into a list; users can sign up and add themselves via sign up forms on websites and social media; and, my personal favorite is the Subscribe app that Mailchimp offers. For companies that want to add people to their lists from on-site locations like a trade show or expo, the app allows people to add their name and email and then automatically syncs that info with a predetermined list.”

SendinBlue is a marketing platform that incorporates email marketing, automated campaigns, and transactional messaging capabilities. It includes features such as a WYSIWYG and HTML editor, template library, email A/B testing, SMS campaigns, landing page builder, email campaign automation, list segmentation, real-time analytics, and heatmap reporting. Reviewers comment that two benefits of using Email Studio is the ability to recommend content for specific subscriber segments and the ability to organize and coordinate sending large amounts of batch or personalized emails to different subscriber groups.
