Announcing the Top Rated Functional Testing Tools for 2019

April 3rd, 2019 7 min read

TrustRadius Top Rated

Today, we awarded the 2019 TrustRadius Top Rated badges for Functional Testing Software. The TrustRadius Top Rated awards are the most trusted in the industry because they are an unbiased reflection of customer sentiment, based solely on user feedback and satisfaction scores. Top Rated awards are the voice of the market and are not influenced by analyst opinion, the vendor’s company size, popularity, or status as a TrustRadius customer.

Functional Testing Tools

Functional testing tools are used to test in-development software to ensure that the software meets functional requirements or specifications. In functional testing, each function of the software is given an input, then the output is examined to see if it matches the expected result. Most software products, however, have a large number of potential inputs, making manual testing infeasible. To solve this problem, development teams use testing software to automate the testing process. Some functional testing products are straightforward test automation tools. Other vendors offer a more comprehensive testing solution, giving users access to testing infrastructure and management features in addition to the testing tools themselves.

Buyers considering functional testing products or services should evaluate their available knowledge, time, and financial resources. If team members have test automation expertise and the time to create and maintain tests, a single functional testing tool may be sufficient. For teams without test automation knowledge or time to create their own systems, a functional testing service vendor could help prevent critical product failures caused by improper testing.

Here are the winners:

Selenium

selenium tr score

Selenium is an open-source browser automation suite often used to test web applications and websites. It acts as a communication layer between programming languages and web browsers. Test developers can write their testing scripts in their programming language of choice, and then use Selenium to execute those scripts on multiple browsers and platforms. Selenium also includes an integrated development environment (IDE) browser plugin that provides a GUI for recording test actions, debugging tests, and running cross-browser tests. A majority (52%) of Selenium users on TrustRadius are from enterprises. Reviewers highlight Selenium’s strong community support, action recording and playback capabilities, and support for multiple programming languages and testing frameworks.

“It has a big community, which allows you to easily get lots of questions answered when a problem occurs. Also, it has support for multiple open source frameworks for test execution (Protractor, per example) and also for test reporting. Their web browser drivers allow us to replicate almost all interactions that a user could do, which offers a really good set of events to test web applications.”

SoapUI

soapui tr score

SoapUI is a test automation tool for web services with support for functional testing, load testing, and API monitoring. Its functional testing capabilities include no-code drag-and-drop test creation, action logging, multi-environment support, and test debugging tools. SoapUI supports testing for multiple web service protocols, including SOAP and REST. SoapUI is available as a free open-source tool or as a paid product with additional automation, integration, and productivity features. Users from enterprises make up a majority (56%) of SoapUI reviewers on TrustRadius. Reviewers value SoapUI’s code-sharing and collaboration tools, drag-and-drop test building feature, and efficient multi-project management capability.

“The interface is quite simple to work with, which makes it one of the most convenient applications to manage SOAP or REST projects. Besides, it also generates a self-saving of projects or requests that have not been previously saved…Excellent for testing the connectivity and responses of web services or endpoints that are hosted within any application.”

Sauce Labs is a cloud-based automated testing platform. It offers access to tools, infrastructure, and expertise that helps companies run automated tests. Sauce Labs includes live browser testing, access to prebuilt browser and OS configurations, emulators for mobile testing, debugging tools, test analytics, and test screenshots and videos. To protect sensitive data, Sauce Labs runs tests within a secure data center and erases test VMs after each run. Integration with SOO services enables administrators to manage user accounts, control user access, and view usage reports. A majority (62%) of Sauce Labs users on TrustRadius are from enterprises. Reviewers appreciate that Sauce Labs has responsive support, allows region-based testing, and quickly adds newly-released devices to their list of emulation options.

“With a lot of real vs virtual devices, Sauce Labs helps a lot with debugging and testing across multiple devices, which reduces the cost of purchasing new real devices…By using Sauce Labs, we are confident that whenever a new device comes to market, we can test it out first before the customer.”
