Announcing the Top NoSQL Databases for 2019

NoSQL Databases

NoSQL is a specific database architecture that allows users to store and file data faster than they can with traditional relational databases, which use Structured Query Language (SQL) as the data querying language. Unlike relational databases that store data in a tabular format, NoSQL databases are compatible with multiple data models, and are therefore better suited for use in large distributed environments. Different types of data models used by NoSQL databases include: document databases, graph databases, key-value databases, and wide-column stores. Some common features and benefits of using a NoSQL database include a less rigid data structure compared to  relational databases, making them easier to manage; allowing users to transfer larger quantities of data into the database, thus being more scalable; and the ability to handle large data loads much faster than traditional relational databases. Along with paid NoSQL databases, there are also open-source options available.

Couchbase Data Platform

Couchbase provides users with a multi-model NoSQL database. Couchbase can be used across industries and enables companies to aggregate data collected from multiple sources within one platform, manage data across different sources from one platform, and surface real-time data updates with an embedded cloud database sync. The product includes features such as multidimensional scaling (MDS), cross datacenter replication (XDCR), a full text search (FTS), analytics, memory-first architecture, and integrations with SQL and big data solutions such as Apache Spark, Kafka, and Elasticsearch. Together, users from midsize businesses and enterprises make up a majority (69%) of Couchbase Data Platform users on TrustRadius. Reviewers value Couchbase Data Platform’s low latency and high performance, scalability, and analytics.

Plus, since nodes can be added to fulfill certain roles (query nodes, indexers, data nodes), you can tune your cluster to your workload. Amazon DynamoDB

As part of its web services portfolio, Amazon offers DynamoDB as a NoSQL database that supports key-value and document data structures. It is a fully managed database and offers users features such as point-in-time backup and restore capabilities, built-in security, in-memory caching for internet-scale applications, compatibility with other Amazon products and services, and unlimited scalability. The majority (52%) of Amazon DynamoDB users on TrustRadius are from small businesses. Reviewers appreciate Amazon DynamoDB’s easy configuration, speed of data digestion, and seemingly endless scalability options.

“[DynamoDB] was a great NoSQL option for us since the entire team was already on AWS anyways and acquainted with its UI… Scalable to Infinity – There are no problems with data when it comes to DynamoDB. We set up a script in our monitoring application that would automatically allocate more storage through the AWS API’s whenever our capacity hit 80% of allocated storage… Easy Setup – DynamoDB will automatically scale horizontally and vertically (if requested) with no maintenance or human intervention required. MongoDB

Developed and supported by 10gen, MongoDB is an open source NoSQL database with paid options available. It stores structured data as JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas (MongoDB calls the format BSON), making the integration of data in certain types of applications easy and fast. With a distributed database at its core, MongoDB features horizontal scaling and geographic distribution. Users from midsize companies and enterprises make up roughly equal portions (29% and 31%, respectively) of MongoDB users on TrustRadius. Reviewers frequently highlight MongoDB’s stability and reliability, it’s strong online community and support, and scalability.

“[MongoDB] is basically a well known and popularly used non-SQL database. It provides great performance, especially when reading big sized document or text (such as sequencing), well-developed functions, and online support. There are many database developers who are already familiar with MongoDB, like other major non-SQL products. It is easy to hire engineers with reasonable payment. Since our project was genomics research, we handled tables with numerous rows and large file size. MongoDB was performing well in hard conditions and very stable.”

Top Rated Criteria

Products included in the 2019 Top Rated NoSQL Databases list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap as of March 15th, 2019. To qualify for the NoSQL Databases Top Rated Award, products must have at least 10 reviews written within the past year, a TRScore of at least 7.5 out of 10, and must receive at least 1.5% of the traffic in their category.  Every reviewer is verified and every review is vetted before publication. Products are plotted on the TrustMap based on end-user data, including users’ likelihood to recommend scores as well as buyer research patterns.
