Predictive Analytics

Predictive analytics is the use of data, algorithms and machine learning to predict the likelihood of future outcomes based on historical data. While predictive analytics platforms can be very complex products and require advanced skill sets in order to use them effectively, in the hands of skilled data analysts and data scientists, predictive analytics can be an extremely powerful tool. It can, for example, calculate customer lifetime value for a given customer; estimate sales projections for the next quarter, or predict what product an online shopper is likely to purchase next.

Predictive Analytics tools are strongly related to Business Intelligence, and they are sometimes considered as part of the BI universe. The distinction between BI and predictive analytics is that BI is usually considered descriptive, i.e. looking at what happened in the past. While predictive analytics is about finding hidden patterns in data to predict future outcomes.

RStudio

RStudio is an integrated development environment (IDE) for the open-source statistical program R. RStudio is available in open-source and commercial editions. The RStudio IDE can be used to automate repetitive tasks or for data mining. It is primarily statistical software and well-suited to data analysis and visualization. Users particularly highlight the data visualization capabilities, excellent documentation and the fact that the product is open-source.

MATLAB

MATLAB is geared towards engineering and scientific research to develop scripts and simulations. It is used to solve problems like product optimization design, time-series analysis, model formulation and image processing. Matlab has particular strength in developing new mathematical algorithms and is popular in the machine learning domain. TrustRadius users like the built-in library of statistical and mathematical libraries, and the availability of a very active online community.

RapidMiner Studio

RapidMiner Studio is a predictive-oriented data science and machine learning tool. It extracts the needed data and displays results in a way that users can determine trends, future outcomes and a wide variety of other useful statistics and facts about otherwise overwhelming data sets. Integrations with R and Python make it easy to pull R and Python scripts into the platform. RapidMiner Studio speeds the creation of predictive models using a drag & drop visual interface. Users particularly like that the platform contains over 1,500 machine learning algorithms and functions, and pre-built templates for common use cases.

IBM SPSS

IBM SPSS is a very mature product and includes a point and click graphical user interface (GUI) for less technical users. It also provides SPSS Syntax, a programming language that is unique to SPSS. Syntax allows users to write commands that run SPSS procedures, rather than using the GUI. Syntax allows users to perform tasks that would be tedious or difficult to do using the drop-down menus. For example, re-running the same analysis many times, or doing complex data transformations. The platform also offers strong geospatial analysis functions.

Users love the platform for its flexibility, the ready availability of expert advice, and the visually appealing output.

SAP Analytics Cloud

SAP Analytics Cloud is a little different than some other products in this category in that it is a combination product incorporating business intelligence reporting and visualization, corporate planning, predictive analytics and machine learning technology. This is an enterprise platform designed to help companies leverage data analytics across departments or the entire enterprise in the service of making better decisions. The platform is a particularly good choice for companies already invested in other SAP technology.

“If your business has already done an investment on SAP, SAP Analytics Cloud would be the tool of choice. Planning with predictive capabilities is one of the key features of the tool in our case for finances and marketing, and given that SAP is releasing new versions with regular additions and features I can safely say that it is a fast maturing solution.”

Top Rated Criteria

Products included in the 2019 Top Rated Predictive Analytics list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap as of March 15th, 2019. To qualify for the Predictive Analytics Top Rated Award, products must have at least 10 reviews written within the past year, a TRScore of at least 7.5 out of 10, and must receive at least 1.5% of the traffic in their category.  Every reviewer is verified and every review is vetted before publication. Products are plotted on the TrustMap based on end-user data, including users’ likelihood to recommend scores as well as buyer research patterns.
