Best Content Management Systems (CMS)75A content management system (CMS, or alternately WCMS for "web content management system") is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA). The CMA element allows the content manager or author, who may not know Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise of a Webmaster. The CDA element uses and compiles that information to update the Web site.Clickability1https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/K7/sO/U0UF5GLFILZN-180x180.PNGOU Campus2https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/Ag/eC/MS2JSBAK34G7.PNGCoreMedia3https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/Xx/FD/WQXOEKG2T8G6.pngUmbraco CMS4https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/tL/Zl/NSCJ7PRHW82O.pngOracle WebCenter Sites5https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/VC/02/T4E108T4IWP2-180x180.PNGIngeniux CMS6https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/9D/Ps/83WDTO08P13N.GIFTitan CMS7https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/yF/0E/H3WORRBW29M8.pngMagnolia (V5 and later versions)8https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/kn/mP/T32FOTCX7RL2.PNGJadu CMS9https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/4V/PJ/TCKQSQVRTD5S-180x180.PNGManageWP10https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/Pd/4H/GAI9LUL0VHZ7-180x180.JPEGAccrisoft Freedom11https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/ID/pd/WKNP9H6QGE2P-180x180.PNGContentful12https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/wz/su/Z3H83FT5R4HQ-180x180.PNGPixpa13https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/Du/0V/K7QVX0EX7IU0.JPEGDNN Platform14https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/Sa/4U/PUOKULTPTLSH.PNGCommonSpot15https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/c6/2w/CI7CI7TE8CWM.jpegTERMINALFOUR16https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/03/tt/CSNN0NXHJ64M.PNGAgility CMS17https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/vD/oK/IAGU1S6OZJ6B-180x180.JPEGCurata18https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/3h/II/CIP6LHB0DHTN.PNGSiteExecutive19https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/UW/D8/65AX93D1B4KL.pngPegboard20https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/9u/th/2VT5ZGH8N0M0-180x180.JPEGTemplateToaster21https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/HC/DM/19CHLRUZFI9D-180x180.PNGeZ Platform22https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/NS/Dl/WR6DSWJ1B3CB.PNGCrownpeak DXM23https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/MA/ir/PNNW4O3FIEUC.JPEGAtomicWriter24https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/Ab/hE/JGQTC0CSD2OE-180x180.JPEGSquiz Matrix25https://media.trustradius.com/vendor-logos/bw/5C/ERRHO3RZZ67Q-180x180.JPEG

Content Management Systems (CMS) Overview

What is a CMS?

A content management system (CMS) is used to manage and deploy website content. Users can create, edit and delete content from a site. Typically CMS software offers an interface that does not require HTML skills or other technical knowledge. Content managers and authors can make changes without the help of a developer. However, customizing the layout and site experience may still require some coding.

Users can rely on CMS software to run any of these types of sites:

  • Blogs

  • News sites

  • Ecommerce sites

  • Corporate websites

  • Intranets

Blogging platforms are essentially very basic, simple content management systems. More complex tools allow users to manage more structured content across a larger number of pages. They also offer more integrations and allow users to configure rules for personalization based on visitor site activity or demographic information. The most advanced content management systems are called digital experience management platforms.

CMS Features & Capabilities

The core purpose of CMS is to simplify content processes for non-technical people. Users can focus on creating, organizing, and delivering content instead of wrestling with code.

The most common CMS features and capabilities include:

  • WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) editor

  • Page templates

  • Library of website themes

  • Content versioning and archiving

  • Mobile optimization / responsive design

  • Publishing workflow

  • Form generation

  • Content scheduling

  • Asset management (images, articles, etc.)

  • Page caching (or other features to speed delivery of content to the site)

  • SEO support

  • Tools to tag content and create a taxonomy

  • Browser compatibility

  • Bulk management

  • E-commerce functionality (i.e. catalog, shopping cart, payment processing)

  • Community management (i.e. commenting, profiles)

  • Localization / regionalization with multi-lingual content

  • Other personalization options

  • User roles and permissions

  • API

  • Analytics tools

  • Import/export content

Pricing Information

Content management systems are usually priced based on a few factors. These include the number of users, volume of content, range of features, and whether it’s a subscription service or a lifetime license.

Some CMS options are open source, and therefore free. (However, these are usually less user-friendly for authors. Open source content management systems will likely require more HTML skills to format content and help from developers to deploy/update content.)

For lower-end options, prices can start as low as $5-$10 per month per user (MS SharePoint and Joomla, for example). Other options include Wix ($5/mo.) and SquareSpace ($12./mo.) Premium packages for enterprise level CMS is typically available by request.
