10000ft

I think 10000ft is good for bare minimum project monitoring, we used it a large company because we didn't need to have exact numbers - it was just a rough idea to see where freelance resources were over burning. If, however you work a much smaller company and really need to know detailed information it's not as effective, there are many other software options that really allow for much closer and precise tracking. I would recommend 10000ft for companies that just need to monitor large freelance teams, track hours and higher level projects that are also monitored on other project management tools. It's a tool I would only use in conjunction with something else.

ConnectWise Control

ConnectWise has worked for every application we have used it on. I use it for troubleshooting of remote computers as well as for employees who need to log in remotely. The interface works equally well for control of Mac and PC and it doesn't really matter which is controlling which (there are a few quirks, though).

Pros

  • Tracks freelance resource hours.
  • Tracks multiple small projects and milestones within the projects.
  • Tracks budget information and scope creep.
No photo available
  • Easy deployment either by manual installation for a one-off installation or to an entire company via Group Policy.
  • Extremely easy to upgrade the client software as new versions become available. It can either upgrade automatically or you can control the upgrade process with a few clicks.
  • The remote command line tool is a valuable asset to ConnectWise Control; allowing us to run commands without disturbing the end user.
  • Many great add-ons are available to extend the functionality of ConnectWise Control.
  • Remote support functionality for providing technical assistance to a new client or to a user that does not want the software permanently installed on the computer.
  • Meeting functionality to provide screen sharing during a meeting for an impressive presentation.

Cons

  • It's often confusing to use and find things, I sometimes find it to be a little counterintuitive as to where functions are (e.g. for tracking budgets and pulling reports).
  • When pulling a budget I always struggled to comb through the large amounts of data and time inputted. When I select a filter the page often wouldn't refresh or i'd forget to de-select a filter as it wasn't in an obvious place, which sometimes left me with pulling an incorrect budget.
  • The data is only as good as the people entering the time. Often with so many small tasks people would enter time incorrectly, in the wrong milestone or project. It lists all of your projects on one page, so it's not easy to enter it and there's a lot of room for error.

  • The only thing that I would recommend is a better interface for changing backend options for the software. An add-on interface is provided for making backend changes to the configuration but it can be confusing at times on how it will affect the overall functionality. For companies that may not have technical support on staff to manage the product, they might forgo any enhancements that may be beneficial. For example, turning on remote printing, extending the command line timeout and increasing the thumbnail preview size.

I think there's limited uses for the tool and much more comprehensive options out there for multiple tools in one. With more people working remotely, it's hard to just use email and face to face, in some ways you need to have a tool that's a fall back and a record of where you are + where you're going

I would recommend this product for both internal remote control of end user workstations and remote access to other clients over the internet. It provides a secure and feature rich product that allows me to complete any necessary tasks without ever leaving the office. I will continue to renew as I'm eager to see what they do next. I would however wish the cloud service had a better API to work in conjunction with team collaboration or chat services to make it easier to connect with end users who use multiple workstations. (Slack or Stride provide this functionality)

On the whole SC is a very powerful tool that is a vital part of the IT service arsenal. On-site visits are an "emergency" only type of scenario. Just "showing your face" is not winning any browny points for me. If my client sees my face, it's usually just to upgrade hardware or to deal other aspects of business. SC provides me and my client the bulk of the info I need to get projects done.

It performs well. It also has full control over windows security and does not get hung up like GoToMeeting when trying to install remote software at the prompt to install as admin / override. I have used TeamViewer, WebEx, LogMeIn and GoToMeeting. This is by far the best at spontaneous, remote control. It is also very easy to get a novice user connected to the session.

I have always gotten a great response from the company and help dealing with any small issues I have had. This has been the best purchase for my work. I need to be able to help people without trying to figure out the mode that I help them through. I find it very easy to connect with people and assist them very quickly with the software. It is a very stable and easy to use support software that I use many times every day.

I find ScreenConnect to be very simple and effective overall, with the main problem being that a number of my clients can't download the app due to existing firewalls and so on. Otherwise it does its job well, and I'm happy with it.

Reach out to IT service providers like myself if you need help with deployment. Standardizing on all your servers and desktops will be a great help. Uninstalling LogMeIn is a nightmare, since you need an admin username and password for each machine before you can run a script on it. Domains are much easier but lone wolves and workgroups are a major chore. Get this done first before attempting to launch your migration. Documentation is VERY important, especially of usernames and passwords where needed. Once you're on ScreenConnect, will help with this. Get good on scripting for functionality. Much can be done via the Tools function of ScreenConnect - but it will be a mixture of PowerShell/DOS and a little Linux shell

Alternatives Considered

Although an interesting tool, compared to Basecamp or Workfront, 10000ft really struggles on the collaboration aspect of the tool. It's great for the bare minimum, recording hours and pulling a budget, but we also relied on email for collaboration and face to face meetings - which is no bad thing! Although for big companies and small projects it's nice to have everything all in one tool so there's less jumping and room for error. That would be my recommendation for any company evaluating it

The other products a good tools too, however the pricing model for ConnectWise Control is much more competitive and the support team is outstanding. It is rare that we run into an issue with the product, but when we do they are always on top of the issue.

As far as I can see there are no real barriers to scaling up - as and when we need more subscriptions, we can add them in with no negative impact to the existing way that we're using the tool

Return on Investment

  • Positive - We were able to track multiple projects at the same time and record accurate hours.
  • Positive - Able to pull budget and excel reports which can the be analyzed further and relatively simply.
  • Negative - There were a lot of times when hours were entered inaccurately which left us in a bind with budget and freelance billing.

  • Quickly provide support to your clients without the need to go onsite.
  • Multiple sessions allow you to work on more than one workstation at a time. This is especially useful if you are doing the same task on multiple machines. This saves you time and your client's money.
