The software is excellent for any application which is too large for Excel. The visual interface surpasses that of most SQL platforms. It is quite useful for data mining in an exploratory way but less useful in statistical and regression analysis.

QlikView

I can't recommend QlikView enough for a small shop on a shoestring budget--with one technical user administering things, all your users can have a really nice, super useful data exploration tool. The burden is certainly on that one user, but the payback is immense considering the price (free!). Solutions like Tableau and Qlik's new product, Qlik Sense, are certainly prettier and less demanding in terms of UI design, but they can't touch QlikView in terms of value.

Pros

  • Crunches huge datasets
  • Has versatility in functionality and grouping capabilities
  • Native XML macro language is easy to master
  • The platform has great visualization tools
Marc Gilbert profile photo
  • QlikView has a simple, relational data model that's REALLY fast. Filtering and changing data is dead simple results are almost immediately available.
  • The free version of Qlikview is almost completely featured, so you roll a pro-level product out to an entire department for really cheap.
  • QlikView is really flexible--if you can imagine it, you can build it.

Cons

  • The ten.do interface could use more detailed documentation
Marc Gilbert profile photo
  • We found that QlikView can be a bit slow in supporting some forms of encryption. It is web-based and we needed to upgrade all of our server to not support the older SSL and TLS 1 protocols, only support TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3. However, QlikView could not run with TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3. We had to wait over six months to get a version that would handle the newer TLS versions.
  • There are so many options with QlikView that you can get lost when developing a visualization. There are still items I have not yet figured out, such as labeling a graph with the name of a selected detail item.
  • QlikView works by pulling the data it is going to use for visualization into its database. I am a security reviewer and I need to make certain that PII and PHI is not pulled by QlikView for a visualization, otherwise this could become a reportable indecent.

Ease of use, ability to load from pretty much any data source. today I created an application that loaded time sheets from excel that are not in a table format. With Qlik's "enable transformation steps" I was able to automate loads of multiple spreadsheets and multiple tabs easily. Could not do that with any other tool.

Once the data is loaded (which can range from simple to complex depending on the data set), it is relatively easy to create new charts/dashboards

They are still building it out. Just recently I received a contact for an escalation manager. I used to just call my sales guy.

My team attended, but I cannot myself rate, but I think it was good as they've successfully launched a training program at our company themselves for users. It was 3-4 day training.

Training was as expected. The demo environments tend to be more fully featured that our own environment, but the training was clear and well delivered.

QlikView were here for a few days, and it was up and running. It was very fast.

Where it fell short, is they did the implementation in demo mode, and didn't initially work with us to help us scale. For example, should we consider a load balancer and multiple servers?. How much capacity can this environment handle from a data and user perspective. We had to learn on own by trial and error. We are bringing them in to do an architectural assessment, but we have to pay for this.

We are now bringing them back in for architectural assessment. It is a fee based engagement.

Alternatives Considered

While we have used SQL, 1010data is really the only industry standard product available for our use.

The entire app can be shared. It has basic reporting, session sharing and attached note/comments, bookmarks, and some form of chat. But it lacks reporting, scheduling, and distribution unless integrated with QNprinting.

It does not handle macros very well, and when tables merge filtering and creating selections is key to the QlikView experience. There's no way to select that, in the underlying table, Key 1 will not appear.

Return on Investment

  • This has sped up the process of analysis.
  • We can now automate process which were performed manually.
  • Analysis can be performed more frequently.
Marc Gilbert profile photo
  • Speed to market is the really big thing. You can attach to multiple data sources quickly and build a consumable model for a dashboard. It doesn’t require IT talent to build. We have built more dashboards and added more users in the last year, then in our entire history. I was at a company of 30k+ employees before, and we didn't have near this level of BI adoption.
  • As a result, we are seeing benefits across business function. For example, within sales, our pipeline has much more visibility. It allows for much faster decisions on things like quotas. One of our biggest power users is in sales ops. She feels her dashboards load 10x faster than our previous tool and she can make changes on the fly.
