The software is excellent for any application which is too large for Excel. The visual interface surpasses that of most SQL platforms. It is quite useful for data mining in an exploratory way but less useful in statistical and regression analysis.

TIBCO Spotfire

TIBCO Spotfire is perfectly suited for the data scientist and the financial analyst who is willing to go beyond simple accounting visuals. The data scientists get the entire range of job responsibilities, from data exploration to final model building to visualization. The financial analyst with a more technical background gets the ability to present financial data in a more unique way.

Pros

  • Crunches huge datasets
  • Has versatility in functionality and grouping capabilities
  • Native XML macro language is easy to master
  • The platform has great visualization tools
Marc Gilbert profile photo
  • Dynamic visualizations, I like that it's intuitive to flip between different ways of seeing the data until I can get the story the data is telling.
  • Importing data, I like being able to import a csv (or in the past, use custom sql to query a db) then do multiple transformations (pivot, calc cols, etc.) and create the visualizations I need. Especially beneficial that I can add to or replace the initial imported data and as long as I match the format the transformations and visualizations will update.
  • As great as it is to view data in Spotfire, the universal reporting standard is powerpoint. Spotfire does a good job allowing me to export the visualizations I have created to a format everyone can view.

Cons

  • The ten.do interface could use more detailed documentation
Marc Gilbert profile photo
  • Spotfire is still kind of "data pulling" strategy based application, the user defines SQL like data fetching command, and also the refresh rate, the Spotfire tries to periodically re-run those "queries", although it does have some data cache mechanism, for rapidly changing data, this strategy's performance sometimes is bad, especially when the data source is not well designed but with large amount of data (an Oracle database with big table without too much index while those columns needs be queried). The Spotfire should improve to better connect with the other data stream /data pushing based API/Systems, also allowing the end user to define "basic data query" and the "delta data query" and "what mechanism is used to determine the delta"

Even though Spotfire does have bugs and inconsistencies and other shortcomings, it's certainly doing a great job overall. It provides great value for the money and is user-friendly enough.

There's a wide range of uses the tool can provide. Building simple visualizations and dashboards is extremely easy, probably as easy as it gets. More customized visualizations take some time to learn and understand but that's expected compared to other tools.

I have only had the basic training. It was very useful for new users. The majority of what is taught in the training can be self-taught by daily use of the product. However there were also many things I learned even after using the product for over a year. I would highly recommend investing in the training offered by TIBCO

The online training is good, provides a good base of knowledge. The video demonstrations were well-done and easy to follow along. Provided exercises are good as well, but I think there could be more challenging exercises. The training has also gone up in price significantly in the last 3 years (in USD, which hurts us even more in Canada), and I'm not sure it is worth the money it now costs (it is worth how much it cost 3 years ago, but not double that.)

Breadth of Deployment

No answers on this topic
In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.

Alternatives Considered

While we have used SQL, 1010data is really the only industry standard product available for our use.
Marc Gilbert profile photo
Spotfire has the unique feature for content analytics: Decipher unstructured, text-based data from any source (e.g., CRM case notes, support tickets, weblogs, social media feeds, emails); mix unstructured content with other data to understand root cause and identify new opportunities

I have collaborated on only a handful of projects so my experience is minimal. From what I have experienced I have two noteworthy comments. First, I have worked side by side with a coworker taking turns making changes in a project, and this worked fine. We were both able to make and save changes without issue. Second, I wanted a few coworkers with no Spotfire experience to interact with an analysis I had put together, but they did not have any Spotfire license, and thus were not able to do so - which is a minor annoyance with an obvious solution.

Spotfire has the ability to connect to all data sources I have tried to connect it to. I give it an 8/10 because once you connect to a data source, there does not appear to be a simple way to edit that data connection (meaning if you wrote SQL to remove a subset of data, I have not found the way to alter that SQL later to change the subset of data).
