The software is excellent for any application which is too large for Excel. The visual interface surpasses that of most SQL platforms. It is quite useful for data mining in an exploratory way but less useful in statistical and regression analysis.

TIBCO Spotfire

Very well suited for data that has multiple variables or data categories that need simultaneous display. It can be a little overkill for simple graphing; however, even then it offers more control and customization than other Excel or spreadsheet programs. It is also much better at 3D display than Microsoft Excel.

Pros

  • Crunches huge datasets
  • Has versatility in functionality and grouping capabilities
  • Native XML macro language is easy to master
  • The platform has great visualization tools
  • Spotfire's interactive visualizations with drill-down capability make it extremely easy to gain insight from large data sets, and deliver that same ability to business users within minimal hand holding.
  • The ability of Spotfire to "mashup" data from disparate data sources creates agile analytics that can provide real business insight in a manufacturing environment (e.g. process data combined with quality data).
  • The strong capability of the web based platform relative to the traditional desktop platform makes it incredibly easy to disseminate analytics across multiple user groups.
  • Default visualizations and colors are visually appealing and allow for quick diving into the data rather than spending significant time fiddling with the setup to get the data to "look right".

Cons

  • The ten.do interface could use more detailed documentation
  • This could just be a problem of the (fairly old) version of Spotfire we're using, but being able to directly control database chunksize would be great. The desktop client seems fairly chatty, so you really feel the network latency when you are doing a direct connection with a database across the country.

The Spotfire client is very reliable. There are sporadic crashes that are made worse due to the lack of an auto-save. Most product upgrades are uneventful. The one major issue we experienced was quickly responded to by Tibco. Our system admins have indicated that the Spotfire servers and the ancillary web-player systems are reliable, but requires time to learn how to deal with the unique nature of the web player and resource loading.

The client on its own is impressively quick with rendering numerous visualizations, loading large amounts of data, and joining several data tables. Performance begins to degrade with the use certain data transformations (eg. pivoting data within the client), calculation expressions (eg. "Over" expressions), and large data aggregations within the Spotfire data engine. We achieved significant performance gains by having our data teams aggregate data at within our data views (before it reaches Spotfire), employing data-on-demand (user initiated data queries in a report), and by employing data limiting options within visualization reports.

We've repeatedly subscribed to a two-day in-person training course that focuses on the visualization aspects of Spotfire. While the trainers are reluctant to deviate from the curriculum it has generally received good reviews in helping users venture into the basic aspects of Spotfire. This course does not touch Spotfire's data engine or expressions used with visualizations. We've also had a one-day "ad-hoc" session that focused on Spotfire's data engine. This format was limited to a small group and tailored to dedicated developers. While this was a great course, it is one of the only ways to understand Spotfire's data engine other than trial and error.

We subscribed to the 8-week "Report Author Bootcamp." This is sufficient to familiarize one with the visualization side of Spotfire, but not the data engine side of Spotfire. At the time that I started using Spotfire there was not a "data engine" training course. We learned this side of Spotfire primarily through trail and error.

Breadth of Deployment

No answers on this topic
In previous roles as well as my current vendor consultation role, I have seen Spotfire start in one business unit and expand to the entire company. Operations, research, IT, accounting, finance, and executives all end up performing ad hoc analyses or reviewing reports through Spotfire. Typically their are analysts or developers in each business unit or group that build Spotfire analyses. Decision makers typically review analyses through the webplayer. The ability to allow everyone in an organization to review visualizations is very simple through the webplayer.

Alternatives Considered

While we have used SQL, 1010data is really the only industry standard product available for our use.
Spotfire's recommendation engine would automatically detect if new data should be added as rows to existing data. With Spotfire 7.9, the recommendation engine for add rows also automatically matches columns with common names but different prefixes and/or postfixes. For example, the new column 'Sales (2016)' will match the existing column 'Sales (2015)'. This is a significant change to SQL data entry. Columns that have the same prefix/postfix will have the prefix/postfix removed from the column name. In the example above, the column name will be 'Sales'. Once again a clear example of excellent data wrangling. The prefix/postfix will automatically be entered on all rows in the origin column. In the example above, the origin column will contain '2016' and '2015' for the respective data sources~ Improvement over companies that have comparable prefix/postfix automation implementation algorithms.

Return on Investment

  • This has sped up the process of analysis.
  • We can now automate process which were performed manually.
  • Analysis can be performed more frequently.
  • I never calculated them myself and cannot comment on this
