  • When having to memorize passwords, 1Password gets rid of this by just leveraging a single Password (thus the name) and then letting it decide the password/passphrase to use. It integrates well into sign up flows so that there's no excuse not to use it always to generate new passwords.
  • When I want to share credit card information so that other people from my teams can use it to make online purchases.
  • When having a single seat/account that needs to be shared across people due to heavy rotation.
  • When the sign-up process has very complex password rules.

If the organization has current or planned investment in Microsoft (i.e. Windows devices for people, is an Office 365 customer, etc), Azure Active Directory is a no brainer and the basic functionality is included in the base plans and licenses. If the organization needs a deeper level of identity management and/or has a high volume of object turn over (account provisioning and deletion), the limit of the basic functionality in Azure Active Directory is quickly realized and additional effort, expense, and technology may be required.

Pros

1Password

  • 1Password's Watchtower service is a real value add - 1Password monitors the security news for evidence of security breaches containing your credentials and alerts you if you have been impacted. That is a huge value as it enables you to get out in front of a security breach and be proactive in protecting yourself.
  • 1Password's core strength is that it makes it easy to practice good security hygiene by using strong, unique passwords for each site you interact with. This is something that all password managers do now, but offering an easy experience is key.
  • 1Password's password sharing features makes it easy to share team credentials with other team members, and to decide who amongst the team gets access to the designated credentials.

  • AAD is super easy to set up! One thing I was nervous about was deployment. However, after reading the setup instructions, I was pleased to find this a very simple process and well detailed in the instructions.
  • AAD works! It simply does it's job. I have not had to monitor it, troubleshoot it, nor reinstall or tinker with it in any way. Making changes is very quick and easy also allowing you to quickly modify how the sync occurs, whether one-direction from your server to Azure only, or bi-directional where it will sync both ways, or only from Azure to your local AD. You have the options and the control to make it work for your environment!
  • AAD has a ton of tools, logs, data that combined provides a great look into what your users are doing, how it is being done and if any error exist it will provide very useful information about it so that you can resolve the matter.

Cons

1Password

  • The automatic name generation for a saved login is sometimes redundant, if the site's title is improperly written
  • Sometimes random logins pop up and I have to choose manually, which is tedious sometimes.
  • I would love to be able to pin or star frequently used logins, when I have multiple logins to a site.

  • In my opinion, Azure Active Directory's dashboard pages are way too busy and difficult to navigate.
  • Azure Active Directory doesn't handle duplicate attributes in user accounts very well.
  • Azure Active Directory pesters the admin to buy additional features by cluttering up the GUI with "suggestions" that you can't remove from the dashboard.

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

I have never had any issues with 1Password and they have always been able to answer my questions adequately resolve my issues. Furthermore, they have a robust peer forum that can be accessed. They have helpful "Get to know Apps", videos and many articles to assist in the process of using the product.

Support is handled offshore and you must send in a request and then schedule a callback. Near real-time support is very problematic. Additionally, you will go through the tiering system. Level one staff at Microsoft have a lot of checkboxes to go through before you are handed to the next tier.Communication with offshore tech support is a true challenge.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

A chief marketplace competitor to 1Password is LastPass. While it is highly regarded and includes some features that 1Password currently doesn't (such as secure sharing), it fell victim to a substantial security breach in 2015, which has made me loathe to reconsider it.Another well-known password manager is Dashlane, which also provides secure sharing, but falls short of 1Password in that it does not provide application password management.1Password is continuously being improved, and the price I pay annually for a family account is more than fair.

We never evaluate other types of products. Since Windows 2000 we have been using Active Directory for the administration and management of our users, devices, and policies. We could certainly see the advances that are produced version by version and I firmly believe that Azure AD is the correct evolution and the way forward. It simplifies our work and manages our structure efficiently and clearly.

Return on Investment

1Password

  • Time savings - I don't spend much (hardly any, actually) time looking up passwords anymore.
  • Security - A lack of it can be costly for any company, am I right?
  • Mobility - even when working from home, or at a coffee shop, my secure data is always in my pocket. This gives me the flexibility I need to do my job well, even when unforeseen circumstances like the kids getting sick take me away from my primary work environment.

  • With several pricing tiers provided by Microsoft, it's easy to find the right solution for you and to ensure you're not overpaying for features you do not need.
  • The analysis and reporting tools in Azure AD exist, but are a bit limited, which could have a negative impact on larger companies looking to closely monitor their user's activity.
  • Overall, Azure Active Directory has saved us time and resources when creating and managing new employee accounts.
