1ShoppingCart

It's really user preference. Some people have been told by other colleagues that it's a great system to use so they want to go with that. There are other systems that do exactly the same thing. I have not found that 1ShoppingCart has any unique features that would lead me to persuade a client to use it over another one. I usually have clients look at two or three options and give feedback. Sometimes it comes down to monthly prices.

Magento

Magento is great for anyone looking for a shopping cart and is selling products. I have steered away from it for a single services company, since it is more geared towards product sales. It does an amazing job out of the box and the administrative management is simple. 5 gold stars.

Pros

  • Email broadcasts are super easy with 1ShoppingCart
  • Affiliate set up and management is easy
  • Overall site and underlying structural organization.
  • SEO is native.
  • Couponing engine rocks!

Cons

  • The UI needs improvement. There are other systems out there that are more intuitive.
  • Customizing/branding a shopping cart page can be a little tricky - when it should be very simple.
  • Magento is A HUGE PAIN to modify. Compared to alternatives (like Woocommerce) it is very hard to change things. Mostly because of how it's built with the Zend Framework and 20,000 files. If you would like to change a comma, good luck. It's going to take a whole day. The waterfall model on the theme helps, but it's very, very hard to change behaviors on the platform.
  • Developer community is very small compared to alternatives (again, Woocommerce). There aren't that many plugins, devs, and in general a community to ask for help. It's expensive and plugins (which are called extensions) are not very well maintained. Also, templates are hard to find. You have Ultimo (we used that and support is great) but besides that, there's not that much.
  • Updating Magento is SO painful. You never know what will happen. Expect anything.
  • Creating static content is hard to manage. At least I couldn't find any plugin for easily managing banners or blog pages.
  • The interface is so old and overwhelming at the same time. There are SO many options, but it's hard to find what you want. At least for me, it wasn't comfortable. You can get used to it, but it wasn't great.
  • The API was not that easy to manage. We had some troubles connecting with it.
  • Trying to debug an error is impossible. Good luck finding documentation on Stack Overflow.

Likelihood to Renew

If I were in charge of the renewal decision I would really take a look at 1SC vs. Infusionsoft. There are many ways each are great and many ways they are different. I would look at what was best for my company and make the choice accordingly. I find that Infusionsoft has many more ways to intuitively market, segment and cultivate new leads and grow the business as a whole than 1SC currently has.

Magento offers lots of templates and themes to customize the look and feel of the store, and even optimize it for mobile phones. The have an extensive library of forms and templates.

Great value for an flexible, open source platform.

Alternatives Considered

Again, it's the client that usually selects the system they want to use. I think 1ShoppingCart has lower monthly payment options so that makes it more appealing. Infusionsoft has a $2k payment that must be made in order to use their product
Magento is not technically a master of any portion of building an ecommerce webpage but it certainly is very good at a lot of things which ultimately was the deciding factor. Primarily its versatility was above that of the other choices. Wordpress created beautiful content efficiently but it wasn't so strong on the ecommerce side. Square Space was great but had its capacity limitations and is more equipped to aid smaller businesses. Magento was also the best priced for how effective it was against the group.

Return on Investment

  • Faster lead conversion, definitely
  • Inventory Management is OK but not great. Each Magento upgrade tinkers with the settings.
  • Having unreliable product information due to complicated uploading systems.
  • In regards to brand perception, resources, and sampling, we saw major success.
