250ok

250ok is a great tool for companies that have recently switched ESPs to monitor inbox placement or for companies that historically have been having email deliverability issues and would like to learn about the root cause and improve. Unlike ReturnPath, 250ok doesn't offer certification, but honestly, you don't need certification if you follow the Gmail/Microsoft/AOL/Yahoo bulk sender guidelines. I haven't seen a company which significantly improved their results with that certification and I've been working for one major ESP for 7 years. 250ok is a good diagnostic/monitoring tool but it is not a panacea for those who continue to violate sender guidelines due to poor list/content management.

Intercom is great for companies that have close relationships with customers or who want to have close relationships with customers. It's the ultimate tool for being able to communicate with customers in a personalized way, provide them with real-time answers, as well as allow them to help themselves with knowledge base tools and automated messaging.

  • Documentation website could use some improvement (i.e. Search on the API Guide page, videos in the User Guide).
  • Can't copy/paste certain things from the UI (i.e. IP ranges).
  • Doesn't integrate directly with some ESPs although it's easy to just use new seed lists.

Intercom

  • They have custom icons which makes it hard to understand which buttons mean what. It can get confusing to the reader that the help docs and the chat messages all have the same icons in the UI.
  • There seems to not be a snooze functionality when you are not on shift and don't want to be receiving messages from intercom.
  • Some messages become notifications (push) and some do not. Maybe it is a bug right now but it is not as consistent as the email notifications are.

It's currently a perfect fit for our needs, and we are customer-focused and small. When we grow, we may need to re-evaluate, but our current team finds it easy. Reviewing conversations is simple and allows for great training. The canned replies make service fast and easy. Smart suggestions remove the need to re-write technical walkthroughs and explanations for our FAQ

Intercom has really done a great job creating a focused product that provides huge value and is super easy to use. Our entire business group and a few engineering members are using it with no training whatsoever which is super rare for any platform.

We use both 250ok and ReturnPath in the company (because we're an ESP) and both have their own pros and cons. Return Path uses panel data while 250ok uses recipients' engagement date for reporting. Both ways have pros and cons but you can't say one is better than the other. They're just different. ReturnPath also offers certification which (I have to be honest) is not as relevant anymore as there is only one way to fix deliverability issues nowadays - by following bulk sender guidelines posted by Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, and other ISPs. ReturnPath has a better documentation website while 250ok could use some refinement. With 250ok you can choose the tools you need and build your own package and save money. With ReturnPath - not so much. 250ok also has partners across the globe while ReturnPath mostly promotes its own services and consultants.

Both Intercom and Drift are comparable in terms of their abilities. Although Intercom came into the market first, Drift has done well to keep up with Intercom's updates and offer similar services of its own. Intercom edges out Drift in terms of its abilities and wealth of integrations. However it would still be worth it to see whether Drift could be integrated with your other services or not and exactly what your requirements are. Based on your usage requirements, Drift could be a cheaper alternative to Intercom. Its pricing structure is flat and easier to use in order to project costs. However both companies are relatively flexible if you opt for custom plans based on whatever you are looking for. Freshdesk is an extremely cheap alternative to the two but offers very little flexibility in terms of usage. The UI customization options, automated alert options. message types and targeting options are limited but considering the low cost, it's an extremely handy option to consider for startups on a tight budget.

  • Using 250ok, we were able to identify problem areas with specific email clients that we couldn't test manually (really old ones). Once solved, reactivated lapsed customers.

  • We have reached more customers by using this system.
  • We have been able to gain more employees since using this because it "created" a job for people to do. Chat with customers!
  • I have not witnessed any negative impact and I am not sure what our ROI would be since that is not my department.
