2Checkout is great when you sell software licenses online or when you offer SaaS subscriptions. I don't think it can work in other scenarios.

Chargent

It was extremely useful for our business as we built a lot of workflow in Salesforce centered around having received deposits or payments from customers. Chargent provides a force.com site which allows customers to pay online directly without interacting with any agents. You can integrate the transaction data directly into your ERP or accounting software.

Pros

  • 2Checkout handles credit cards that I would not be able to accept from my country.
  • Fraud prevention works. They saved me a couple of times and I appreciate that.
  • I always received my payments on time. I never had to complain.
  • Extremely easy to implement + 100% native on salesforce.com.
  • Payment information is on the opportunity level making it easily visible across teams.
  • Payment request feature allows cutomers to pay online via force.com site.
  • Supports recurring payments which allows payment processing to be run on an automated schedule.

Cons

  • I get my payments via a Payoneer credit card. Sometimes I would prefer to receive a wire transfer instead but it is not so easy to switch payment methods.
  • Payment checking and purchase confirmation take about 10 minutes. It is not too much but for clients, it seems an eternity.
  • There tended to be frequent updates being released, however as an admin, it was difficult to know when there are updates available and keep up with the rate of the release cycle.

The company founders are quick to respond to any questions or issues and are obviously very well educated on their product. They have helped us brainstorm solutions that go beyond the scope of their product and generally provide an excellent customer experience.

Alternatives Considered

I used to sell my software on Avangate and PayPal at the same time. Costs were very similar but I decided to abandon PayPal because it sometimes required human interventions. I also checked DigitalRiver, but it wasn't easy to setup and I never completed all requirements.
Chargent was already implemented in the system I inherited. It's a great product that keeps improving and the customer support is excellent.

Return on Investment

  • 2Checkout charges you for every sale. It does not have other costs that can affect your finances.
  • 2Checkout has two plans for software companies. Make sure to select the one that is right for you or you will find yourself paying a high commission.
  • Decreased time to collect payments. Payment collection process can be integrated into team workflows, thus incentivizing quicker collection from customers.
  • Increased revenue collection as billing information is easily accessible on the opportunity.
  • Reduced labour needed to process payments. Recurring payments can be automated, payments can be accepted online.
