Stripe

Stripe is great for small businesses and ministries like mine. For someone with all kinds of clients and accounts, offering all kinds of payment options to those who are submitting money to my business is always a plus. No matter what payment methods they use, it gets wired right to my business bank account with no problem at all

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Customizable
  • Contains all basic reports and marketing tools
  • Stripe attempts to bill clients multiple times, so if the initial attempt to collect payment fails, they keep trying. Often payment is collected on the 2nd or 3rd try. This ability to re-try billing attempts with the same user on a monthly basis increases the overall amount we collect in payments.
  • It is easy to search for customers using Stripe- type in the first few letters of the subscriber's name and they immediately appear. It's a simple feature, but very useful when fielding customer service calls.
  • Stripe does make it easy to create new coupon codes or issue partial or total refunds.

Cons

  • Local payments methods are an area for improvement. Not all are connected so far.
  • Bulk updates for catalogs are missing at the moment, to be added in upcoming releases I hope.
  • Stripe assumes that recurring payment plans will have a pre-determined amount ($25, $50, $100, etc). However, my organization allows donors to input a custom $ amount, which requires a Stripe admin to manually create a new subscription plan for each donor. This can get labor-intensive with a large volume of custom payment amounts. This would not be an issue if your organization only allows pre-determined subscriptions, though.
  • Stripe's default email receipt is not very customizable. Third-party options are available, however.
  • Refunds are only allowed on a case-by-case basis. It would be nice to have a bulk refund feature.

Alternatives Considered

Avangate Digital Commerce is more flexible, can be adjusted for your business needs.
Stripe is much more intuitive for new small businesses like ours. It makes it easy to set-up, manage, and grow your business. It's also very easy to add new products and services that you want to sell on your website. Stripe also has plug-ins with other softwares, such as Xero, making it easy to track all of your revenue.

Return on Investment

  • Conversion rate has grown up since we started using Avangate Digital Commerce
  • Refund rate has descreased also
  • Extremely positive for ROI since it's what we use to process payments.
  • Fielding disputes is a relatively time-consuming, slow process.
  • Logs are detailed enough to where you can usually trace an issue or change easily to its origin.
