2Checkout

2Checkout is great when you sell software licenses online or when you offer SaaS subscriptions. I don't think it can work in other scenarios.

Stripe

Stripe is perfectly suited for a software company. It is relatively easy to use, has the features necessary to accept recurring payments, and has enough integrations to fit into what you are currently using. However, I have a colleague who used this at a dental office that he worked at, and he said that it wasn't nearly enough to track the extra gears of insurance and down-payments, and they had to switch after several months.

Pros

  • 2Checkout handles credit cards that I would not be able to accept from my country.
  • Fraud prevention works. They saved me a couple of times and I appreciate that.
  • I always received my payments on time. I never had to complain.

  • We needed a system that could easily handle on-off payments as well as monthly/annual subscriptions. Stripe handles it well.
  • Stripe easily and effectively integrates with our other tools. We use Baremetrics to track our numbers (more robust for detailed reporting that what Stripe offers by default) and Stripe makes it as easy as a few clicks.
  • Sending invoices is easy with Stripe. We sometimes make changes to customers' billing accounts, have questions pop up, or need to save the record elsewhere. You can easily create these invoices and download them to your computer in PDF format, or create a link that the customer can visit to view the invoice.

Cons

  • Local payments methods are an area for improvement. Not all are connected so far.
  • Bulk updates for catalogs are missing at the moment, to be added in upcoming releases I hope.

  • Stripe assumes that recurring payment plans will have a pre-determined amount ($25, $50, $100, etc). However, my organization allows donors to input a custom $ amount, which requires a Stripe admin to manually create a new subscription plan for each donor. This can get labor-intensive with a large volume of custom payment amounts. This would not be an issue if your organization only allows pre-determined subscriptions, though.
  • Stripe's default email receipt is not very customizable. Third-party options are available, however.
  • Refunds are only allowed on a case-by-case basis. It would be nice to have a bulk refund feature.

Alternatives Considered

I used to sell my software on Avangate and PayPal at the same time. Costs were very similar but I decided to abandon PayPal because it sometimes required human interventions. I also checked DigitalRiver, but it wasn't easy to setup and I never completed all requirements.

  • PayPal is too simple of a program
  • It doesn't provide the ability to differentiate between a payment and a donation
  • Finding customers wasn't as easy.
  • The monthly charges plus "per transaction" cost of Paypal didn't help us
  • Stripe has become more recognized for non - profits
  • It was easier to manage Stripe than PayPal for our organization

Return on Investment

  • Conversion rate has grown up since we started using Avangate Digital Commerce
  • Refund rate has descreased also
Madina Mukhamedova profile photo
  • Makes managing our monthly subscription payments very easy
  • Follows up with failed credit card transactions, taking away the burden on us to do it
  • Customer can easily pay for our services from within our application
