3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

Magento Open Source

Magneto is very well suited for larger e-commerce businesses. Our catalog of thousands of products across multiple stores and storeviews is very easy to manage with Magento Open Source. I can imagine that for a smaller start up company, Magento Open Source would be overkill. If you are looking for a platform with a lot of built in extensions and customizations, Magento Open Source is probably not best for you. Expect to do some custom development if you are going to go with Magento Open Source.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.
  • Out of the box product display allows for you to quickly get your products shown to the consumers
  • Customizable product options allow for a wide variety of selection of products
  • Customizable payment and shipping options allow for many different use-case scenarios for the consumer.

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.
  • The community around Magento is very poor compared to other software. We migrated to WooCommerce and definitely there's more support there. More plugins, extensions, developers, etc., and at a reasonable price. This is one of the key points why we migrated. Magento is very expensive and slow to develop here. For WooCommerce there are plugins for everything, from popular analytics software to loyalty. This is a HUGE point to consider.
  • Debugging is painful. Some times you get an error that shut downs your entire store, and why did it happen? No clue. There's no documentation, there are 20,000+ files and at least for us, the framework on which it is built is not that user-friendly. This is expensive and there are not that many options compared to other software.
  • Changing the design or making changes is also very hard, because of the framework, the many files, and how complex Magento is.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.
In Drupal, you have to add on the commerce plugin in order to add on the features. OroCRM is the same way. Magento provides the out of the box functionality as opposed to building out additional plugins and more coding.

Return on Investment

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.
  • It has allowed us to greatly expand the business to quality clients.
  • We can build a level of expertise in a particular platform on a niche market.
