They seem to be very well suited to startup websites. We need to almost threaten to leave to get them to pay attention to us, a 10-year customer and a larger company. When they do pay attention, we pretty much got the royal treatment. When we have brought new ideas and concepts to them, they make us pay for the upgrade, then offer that upgrade to all other customers. Essentially we fell like we are funding their R&D at times.

Magento Open Source is well suited for small or medium-sized businesses who don't have a lot of money or time to start their online store. If our web design client can select a specific pre-made template beforehand, and they do not want a ton of complex or extremely specific functionalities, then we suggest Magento Open Source to the client. If the client is a large retailer wanting very specific features, then OpenCart or complete custom code might be a better choice.

Pros
3dcart
- 3dcart is a more basic website tool that can get customers started quickly.
- It only has a certain amount of options, making it an ok tool to use if you don't need a particularly large website.

- Magento 2 CE has a very robust document workflow which mirrors most mid-large ERP systems. There's a "papertrail" which mimics your business processes, and each part of the process is exposed to the API which makes for some great integration potential.
- Magento 2 CE is also great for tracking customer history, saves a record for each and allows you to understand customer interests better.
- Magento 2 CE is highly expandable, with a full marketplace of free and premium modules that should accomplish some pretty niche sales or service goals.

Cons
3dcart
- 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
- There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
- It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.

- Not the simplest of solutions to use or maintain from an end-user perspective
- Other platforms are better with regards to SEO in our experience
- Fairly sluggish and slow compared to other platforms without the correct server specification and performance optimization work.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

While Shopify is pretty slick in operation, Shopify's fees are way, way, way too expensive compared to 3Dcart.Magento required a hefty redesign price Tag. BigCommerce seemed like overkill for our needs as an e-commerce company. Big Commerce has some very good material to help you decide on how to pick an e-commerce engine that was helpful to us.

Magento is hands down better than any hosted platform (i.e., BC), but only if you have a good development team. Hosted platforms are very limiting as to what you can accomplish "outside the box." Magento is much better than WooCommerce in its user friendliness and its feature set.

Return on Investment
3dcart
- Because 3dcart ended up not being the best for our business, we decided to go with BigCommerce instead.
- It was an excellent platform to consider, and we tried it for a time but quickly realized it did not provide what our business needed.

- It definitely let us start with a decent store and scale from 0 to 15,000 products without many performance issues. But that comes with a cost: we were unable to change the design of the checkout, SEO was poor, and adding banners or more store-related things was very time consuming.
- Debugging is hard and you will break your head with some errors that break your store, and you don't know how to solve them. This was one of the reasons why we left it.
