3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

Magento Open Source

Magento Open Source is well suited for small or medium-sized businesses who don't have a lot of money or time to start their online store. If our web design client can select a specific pre-made template beforehand, and they do not want a ton of complex or extremely specific functionalities, then we suggest Magento Open Source to the client. If the client is a large retailer wanting very specific features, then OpenCart or complete custom code might be a better choice.

Pros

3dcart

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

Magento Open Source

  • Magento is perfect if our web design client likes a specific pre-made template and wants a fast solution.
  • Magento allows us to customize its open-source code to create additional features and functionality.
  • Magento saves small businesses time and money if they only need a simple solution.

Cons

3dcart

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.

Magento Open Source

  • Magento 2 community is full of known and new bugs with long-pending pull requests and the community is on the hook for changes. Submit an very obvious issue to the github repo, and you will likely be met with a "this is open source and you use at your own risk." I counter this poor attitude with the fact that open source community has standards, and we do not label a "release" until those standards are met. Otherwise it's just a alpha, beta or numbered build. We don't release obviously bad software until it's fully working.
  • Magento is expensive to maintain. You will need a well-paid php developer with apache and hosting knowledge, or you will have to hire an external firm. Either option will turn your website into an additional $100k/yr cost center, so you'd better be ready to ramp up sales. Every feature update or bugfix in the past year has uncovered more bugs, which my devs fix, but at the cost of timelines and billed hours way outside of my budget and target dates.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

3dcart

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.

Magento Open Source

WooCommerce, when fully "plugged-in" required server resources which drowned our host. We hit a wall with growth due to these resources and researched redevelopment on Woo or migration to a new platform. We chose the latter.Shopify and BigCommerce were limited to their closed ecosystems and would not have given us the open avenue to grow in the directions we were looking for.

Return on Investment

3dcart

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.

Magento Open Source

  • Delays in development leads to missed timelines and opportunity loss.
  • High cost of development and maintenance may currently outweigh the growth.
  • Better handling of customer and order information makes for better customer service.
  • Excellent API has been a boon for integration with our ERP
