3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

If you're looking to get your e-commerce site off the ground Magento CE is a great place to start. It's highly flexible and supports all different kinds of devices for end users. It's multi-tenant so with one backend, several different sites can be setup within it. Lastly, it's very easy to integrate Magento with 3rd party tools.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

  • Magento is fully extendable so that you can accomplish any special needs for a client without having to build a custom site.
  • Magento is powerful and fast on the proper web server. It can handle a huge number of products and customers successfully.
  • Magento has a very flexible catalog structure so that you can sell most any type of product or product combination.
  • Magento is easy to integrate with other systems.
  • Magento is great for non-technical people to be able to update content, as it's also a full CMS system.

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.

  • One feature of Magento CE that I feel needs improvement is with the structure of the system. Many of the important SEO factors like minifying the CSS files don't work without causing some issues on the site. It does take someone skilled to get a site working properly. It's not built for the novice in mind.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.

In a few words:
  • WooCommerce: easy to setup, huge community and easy to customize. Hard to scale, but can be done.
  • PrestaShop: poor brother of WooCommerce. Less community, less customization... not sure why anybody would use it.
  • Shopify: SaaS solution. Harder to customize (due to Shopify restrictions) but very easy to setup and has many nice add-ons. Hard to manage at scale.
  • Magento: good at scaling, expensive to customize and in general to develop. Hard to customize.

Return on Investment

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.

  • I think it is safe to say that without Magento Open Source we would not have a business so Magento has had an incredibly positive impact on our business. We essentially manage our entire website with Magento Open Source.
  • A "negative" impact is that some features were not available out of the box and we had to go to outside vendors or spend time developing custom solutions on our own. This obviously cost us money in the short term.
  • While Magento Open Source is complicated to learn, once you do pretty much anyone in our department is able to jump in and perform any task that they need done. The learning curve is a little steep, but it is very accessible once you know how to use it.
