3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

Shopify

I think Shopify is well suited for eCommerce of any kind. I have been an online retailer since the dark ages of 1998 and things have changed a lot. I found the site very business friendly and a good site for a beginning retailer as well as one who has been selling online for awhile. I know when customers go to my site, that everything will work correctly. Items will go into carts and customers can easily purchase anything they like. I haven't used it for anything else, so I am unsure as to how Shopify would be as a promotional site for either a business or an individual.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

  • They have an amazing selection of visually stunning store templates that can be personalized to fit the needs of the individual or organization
  • They make fulfilling orders insanely easy by sending you text and email notifications when a new order is placed
  • The analytics that they provide for your store are top- f-ing -notch. You can quickly and easily see sales and growth (hopefully growth) which allows you to more accurately plan for the future based on past traffic.

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.
Tracy Beers profile photo
  • To reiterate a previous point, my only comment about the limitations of Shopify's service is that for a company with many products (growing beyond 5+ products), Shopify's pricing makes it completely prohibitive for use. The pricing model is not built out to support this and it's just not practical, especially for any startup company that is working with limited funds.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

I think most people are able to suer Shopify that have used a computer. There are some features that take a bit longer to learn. If you are not a creative person it may be a bit more difficult to learn the website customization, but with a help guide or tutorial it will only take a few tries to understand how to work the interface

In terms of support I give Shopify a 9 out of 10 because they're always very friendly and thorough, and they personally can't solve my problem for me they always point me in the proper direction with the proper information I need to move forward

Alternatives Considered

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.

WordPress isn't as strong on the fulfillment side of the product process. We looked at integration via WooCommerce, which I am a fan of but ease of integration helped Shopify win out in this scenario. Again -- important to note, it was of benefit for us because in selling watches we only had four major product variations to choose from. If there were dozens of products and dozens of configurations, Shopify would get really pricey -- but again, this probably was not was Shopify was intended for

Return on Investment

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.
Tracy Beers profile photo
  • I pay for the basic sellers option and I feel it is overall worth it. I only need to sell 3 full-price products to make back my monthly cost.
  • I feel that the ability to have multiple channels redirect to my shop is a major reason for the shop's success.
