3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

Shopify

Shopify is definitely well suited for people who have a propensity for creating and working on websites for sales. Once you get a hang of it and the store is up and running, it starts making more sense. They try their best to make it very user friendly.Shopify is less appropriate for POS product selling. It seems to be an afterthought of the company, like they wanted to make a great online store and then Ted from Accounting (you know Ted, whose uncle golfs with the CEO every weekend?) well Ted had the idea to sell things in an actual store and rather than risk Ted's uncle saying something to the CEO next weekend the people in the meeting kinda put something together to shut Ted up.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.
  • Can quickly launch a store, even within a day
  • No need for development work with lots of themes & plugins
  • Low cost, between $29 to $79 a month

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.
  • To reiterate a previous point, my only comment about the limitations of Shopify's service is that for a company with many products (growing beyond 5+ products), Shopify's pricing makes it completely prohibitive for use. The pricing model is not built out to support this and it's just not practical, especially for any startup company that is working with limited funds.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

Shopify continues to earn me money and attract new customers without becoming a burden to my business, so it only makes sense to stick with Shopify. After beginning with setting up stores for my other clients I became so happy with the platform I progressed to setting up a store for myself.

I think most people are able to suer Shopify that have used a computer. There are some features that take a bit longer to learn. If you are not a creative person it may be a bit more difficult to learn the website customization, but with a help guide or tutorial it will only take a few tries to understand how to work the interface

In terms of support I give Shopify a 9 out of 10 because they're always very friendly and thorough, and they personally can't solve my problem for me they always point me in the proper direction with the proper information I need to move forward

Alternatives Considered

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.
Shopify was an easy selection for my recommendation as I have been using it for personal business for over 4 years, to really test and experience many of the piloting opportunities we were looking to test and learn with.

Return on Investment

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.
  • Increase sales from 0 to 20 orders per month
  • Attract a visits of 3,000 per month
  • Hassle free SEO setup
