3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

Weebly

Weebly is a great platform if you need a brochure-ware website. It's got some great features and you can't beat how easy it is to use. On the downside, the blog and e-commerce functionality is limited. Although there are several fairly easy to use platforms out there, I use it for many of my clients that are just starting out or need one they can eventually manage and update themselves as their businesses evolve -- which is especially true in the beginning or at the startup of a business. However, it can also scale, since you can create almost any number of pages and add content like audio and video. Additional functionality may be added through embeds.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

  • Drag and drop interface makes it very easy to add all types of content, including images, text, video (and YouTube videos), embeddable applications and more.
  • It's very easy to set up navigation features like cascading menus and sticky navigation (where the menu stays put - may depend on the template chosen though).
  • A technical backend is fairly straight-forward for setting up a fav icon, 301 redirects, SEO, Google Analytics, etc.

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.
Tracy Beers profile photo
  • I wouldn't recommend using Weebly for extensive e-commerce functionality. There are better tools out there.
  • If you're seriously considering creating a blog as the core of your business, Wordpress does a much better job.
  • Templates and overall design of the templates are somewhat limited. If you're looking for more design-appeal, Squarespace is a better option, although you sacrifice some of the ease-of-use (not much though once you get used to it).
  • The Designer Platform for agencies haven't you in years, and there's no information from Weebly about when it will be upgraded.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

Weebly is consistently adding features that line up with our needs. The ease of use makes it the perfect program for us since we have users of multiple age brackets and knowledge of web design. We love that we can give users access to only the pages they are affiliated with

It is simple to use and offers enough customization to make a website that is personalized. Templates are pretty standard and the help section is laid out well by topic with frequently asked questions. Some design knowledge is helpful, but through trial and error anyone can get a hold of the reins fairly quickly.

Alternatives Considered

I found 3dcart to be the most cost effective and easiest to use for my smaller to medium sized business clients.

WordPress takes time to set up properly, needs hosting and always has security issues. Drupal is getting more and more complicated every year. Again, hosting a Drupal installation is a security headache. Weebly, being a hosted solution, completed does away with the need to worry about installation or keep updating the server side code because of security issues. They automatically take care of this. With Unbounce, you get a hosted solution which is pretty good at A/B testing but you don't get the range of templates and widgets that come with Weebly

Return on Investment

  • 3dcart has enabled my clients to quickly and easily get up and running with an online store giving them an almost immediate ROI.
Tracy Beers profile photo
  • I can build two nearly identical sites, one on Weebly and one on the market leader CMS, and the difference in build time is staggering. Weebly takes approximately 5% as long to build.
  • As far as I know, Weebly servers have not gone down once in five years. Surely they must have, but it has never been reported. The uptime and security are magnificent, which means I never get angry calls from clients. That counts for a lot.
  • Servicing Weebly sites is much easier, faster, and less labor-intensive than the industry leading CMS, which means we can manage sites for lower-budget clients and still make a profit.
