I think 7Sheep is a great tool for a startup. We can focus on our software and do not need to implement everything on our own. If you can integrate your software via the API it is even more amazing. 7Sheep is well suited for small teams. Larger teams should evaluate if the user management is detailed enough.

eTrigue

The platform is most scalable-- works for small and large companies alike. Key for most of our clients is the little to no IT support required to implement and run the platform. I would definitely explore this when looking at a marketing automation platform beyond the "batch and blast" solutions. We've yet to have an issue working with our clients' sales and/or marketing teams to implement. And most of our clients work in the platform independent of the programs we run; are able to set up acampaign, upload lists and/or pull for CRM, and run reports on their own in very short turn.

Pros

  • With an embedded form we capture leads on our website. These leads get a drip campaign.
  • After someone has signed up we store relevant details in 7Sheep via the API and start a drip campaign.
  • All users and leads get our newsletter and updates.
  • We have installed the 7Sheep tracking code on our website to get additional information about our leads.
  • eTrigue DemandCenter is easy to implement and the CRM integration is also quite straightforward. This is key for our clients that don't want to rely on their IT team for support.
  • eTrigue DemandCenter email/campaign set up rocks. It's drag and drop, you can pause a campaign in process, make changes, and then restart without interrupting the campaign flow, without having to start over. LOVE this!
  • Anonymous tracking is pretty cool as once a unknown visitor registers (becomes cookied) eTrigue DemandCenter maps back the anonymous tracking to the now known visitor in one record so you can see what the prospect viewed prior to be being "known".

Cons

  • A Wordpress plugin is missing. This could make it easier to install the tracking code and to embed forms.
  • A payment module. If we could get donations directly in the tool we would not need to integrate our payment software.
  • The templates for mail merge need to be integrated via the 7Sheep support. Would love to do this on my own.
  • Easier synchronisation features with other applications.
  • The new advanced reporting that was just released solved any complaints we had.

Because it's affordable and really useful to me as a freelancer - I don't see that changing anytime soon!

All of the reasons previously mentioned in this review - highly sophisticated platform specifically designed by and for demand generation marketers - easy to use - great customer support.

Having used Marketo, Act-On, and Pardot, eTrigue is MUCH easier to use and easier to train new team members to use.

You will need to think about which users you want to have each role, and the features allowed in each role. You should watch the training videos before you get live training. It saved us several hours as they had already answered 90% of our questions.

Alternatives Considered

Better focus on automation.
In 2010, we evaluated Marketo and Pardot alongside eTrigue. And eTrigue was considered the 'Cadillac' of MA tools. More recently, we've checked out Eloqua and Hubspot. All of these are more-or-less clones, having all the same core features. Except for HubSpot, which should be in a class of its own. eTrigue has been around a very long time, and DemandCenter can hold its ground against all of these MA solutions.

Return on Investment

  • I do send newsletters more regulary and so I keep better in touch with my clients.
  • I have an easy tool I can recommend to my clients.
  • With the 7Sheep API I can integrate my projects very easy. Especially WordPress which I mainly do.
  • The most obvious impact on ROI has been the reduction in man-hours within marketing to achieve the same quantity or effect - which ultimately lead to achieving more with the same man-hours. Where before, you could design and deploy a single email with ListMail, or MailChimp, or whatever, you can now set up a 3-email series with a better, more targeted audience, with about the same amount of effort.
  • From the perspective of sales personnel, alerts and lists from DemandCenter are far, far, FAR more likely to lead to a sale than, say, cold calling. Therefore, the sales person investing time into pouring through DemandCenter data has great overall return. Or, at the very least, data can be extrapolated that help the sales person prioritize leads.
  • Another return on investment, of DemandCenter costs, is related to the reduction of lost sales from missing or untimely follow-ups of the trial versions we offer of our software. Since requesting a trial version of our software is conducted through a web form (which submits to DC), the automated drip nurturing, followed by a demo-expiry reminder, help keep everyone reminded of what to do. In fact, the email reminder to the end-user is fashioned to look like it comes from their rep - so if/when they reply, it's a good indicator of any end-of-trial processes/pushes that need to take place.
