I use 7Sheep for marketing as a sales person. This works well for me as a single user. I do not think I could use the software together with my colleagues. Although we could have separated lists the access rights might not fit our use case. It has a strong marketing focus and cannot replace a full CRM system.

Pardot

It's an extremely powerful tool with its integration with Salesforce but it takes a long while to become efficient and effective with the product. Someone who has a lot of experience with Salesforce and Pardot itself would be well suited to use this, however, most people would probably find this outdated and be able to find a better option.

Pros

  • Whenever we needed help their support was quick to guide us.
  • Contact form integration on our website was done via an embed code. We use WordPress and just copied the code on the page.
  • Aggregating our different contact lists from several systems was very important for us. We [now] have a comprehensive overview of our contacts and donors in a single online tool.
  • 7Sheep is a European company and also has its servers in Europe. Because of data protection laws this was key for us.
  • We can produce form letters straight out of the tool.
  • UI - Pardot has a great UI which is intuitive and very ease to learn and use.
  • Setting up automation rules and completions action are very easy.
  • I like the Pardot wizards that are used in setting up emails and landing pages. Not a bunch different smart campaigns you need to set up.
  • Excellent customer service, They have open office hours a few times a day where customers can call in and get problems solved at no charge.

Cons

  • A Wordpress plugin is missing. This could make it easier to install the tracking code and to embed forms.
  • A payment module. If we could get donations directly in the tool we would not need to integrate our payment software.
  • The templates for mail merge need to be integrated via the 7Sheep support. Would love to do this on my own.
  • Easier synchronisation features with other applications.
  • The reporting through GoodData is a bit cumbersome. It takes some getting used to to use effectively.
  • The ability to have custom opportunity close / won choices. As a company who uses parent/child opportunities to track large projects where we could be submitting several bids for the same project through different customers we are not able to use any of the opportunity reports within Pardot. As we can't exclude any lost "children" from the formulas.
  • Need the ability to add custom filters for adding prospects to lists. For example being able to say do this AND this, OR this AND this. Right now you only get the option of all ANDs or all ORs.

The system has so many features that it does take a while to get spun up on what they all do and how they interact with each other. Once you dedicate the time to training to reach that crucial level of understanding however, it is easy to creatively apply the varied functionality of the program to address issues that would have previously seemed to mandate the use of another system.

There have been a couple of service incidents over the past few months. I'm not sure if it has to do with Pardot integrating their infrastructure with ExactTarget. However, they responded well with proactive communication and a debrief as to what happened.

Access to online chat is a very nice feature that I will use when I just want to get a quick question answered. For more difficult issues I have opened tickets and they are resolved in a timely manner by a very knowledgeable staff. The online training videos are also helpful for learning new skills or tools.

The trainers at the Pardot user conference (Elevate and Connections) were very knowledgeable and presented the material well. Again, the content was targeted to more of a new user audience, and was not really relevant for folks who had been using the product for 2+ years.

Pardot's online training touches on all topics briefly and vaguely without much indepth exploration into how a final outcome could look, such as Nurturing Campaigns, Email templates, landing page templates, etc...The only true way to uncover Pardot's full capabilities is to have Front End design and coding experience. Without this key skill set, I would not recommend Pardot to another business.

We were able to implement ourselves in 30 days, which included a migration from Loopfuse. The process was very straightforward and Pardot provides good documentation using Basecamp during the implementation phase. Your Pardot implementation specialist is a resource available during your 60 day implementation phase and you can ask any and all questions.

Alternatives Considered

We all are more effective using 7Sheep and like the additional insight. Personal support is very important for us and we get that with 7Sheep.
The only other product we evaluated was HubSpot. We felt that for the cost, Pardot was a better option for us.

Return on Investment

  • Saving time with my event being able to create auto-messages and also all of the badges.
  • Using templates I set up very easily with the template editor has given a more professional look and I have been complimented on it.
  • I get a lot more responses to my messages now that I send them out with the personalisation. We also are able to save a lot of time without using the mail merge in word and Excel.
  • Quick identification of leads who are engaging with our content and website
  • Better brand perception with our email marketing, and increased leads from those email campaigns as a result
  • We have been able to become more proactive in our lead engagement before, during and after conventions we attend
