8x8 Virtual Office Enterprise Suite

Some of the best scenarios are working remotely. It really allows you to get everything you need out of an office phone right from your computer/cell without any need for hardware. It's not great when you've already plugged in a dialer of some sort, or software like Outreach.io that has some overlap in features (click to dial, especially).

Jabber

Truly the flexibility of not being tethered to my desk is the greatest joy of Cisco Jabber. It is so beneficial for me to be able to go to other offices and be collaborating with others but still not miss important calls to keep work flowing. This tool goes a long way to making users available to communicate while getting work done. I would totally recommend this as it is a great tool for modern professional environments.

  • It has a presence system. We can see in a glance if our contact is available, away, offline, or does not want to be disturbed. We can also see where our contact is (for example, in the office, working from home, from a hotel or customer premises)
  • Thanks to its voice and video calls capability, Jabber provides the ability to call anyone from anywhere in the world, as if we were actually in the office (integration with Cisco IP telephony). Someone could call us at our office phone number, and we can pick the call from our computer, whatever our current location (office, home, hotel, etc). We can also consult our voicemail from Jabber.
  • Jabber provides a Windows and a Mac client. I've used both, and they are quite user-friendly, enjoyable to use every day overall.

  • It would be great to be able to tie Jabber to additional phone lines other than my direct number so that voicemails could be received and answered more promptly and so that I can see missed calls or incoming calls on my computer to other lines that I answer.
  • It's hard to search for and add contacts to the chat function in Jabber.
  • The window indicating a new message appears at the top of the screen instead of at the bottom where I am used to seeing desktop notifications which can be difficult to adapt to.

Requires too much technical assistance to users, get more calls for supporting Jabber than other. A lot of people admit they don't use the product anymore after having to call tech support several times. They would rather pick up and use their iPhone.

Even with the Jabber client, Cisco support is outstanding, with the knowledge and quick response you would expect from them. Their engineers understand their products and our issues are usually addressed quickly and by the same person we originally connect with instead of getting passed to additional people. Follow-up is good too. Their support is thorough.

Alternatives Considered

I had no control over this but we are using 8x8 virtual office enterprise suite to get some of the functionality, mostly click to dial and contact handling. It's not exactly a competitor, but if you're looking for an easy way to utilize your company phone system remotely, I've had a great experience, including working from home for an entire month on it.

In 2008, we invested significantly in Cisco's phone system. Jabber is an extension of that system. In 2011, we compared Microsoft's Lync and Skype to Cisco's Jabber client. Both were inferior in call quality, video display, security, and user interface. Jabber stood out above the rest so far there were no comparisons. Since then, Skype for Business has gotten more secure and with Microsoft's purchase, I believe they have merged several technologies. If we were evaluating the products today, I think we would likely choose another product, simply due to the costs associated with the licensing vs. other solutions on the market.

  • Can sometimes be bombarded with messages from several places-phone, email, Jabber, etc. which can be overwhelming
  • Not everyone uses Jabber to the same extent so it's important to know your audience when choosing Jabber vs. email.
