Some of the best scenarios are working remotely. It really allows you to get everything you need out of an office phone right from your computer/cell without any need for hardware. It's not great when you've already plugged in a dialer of some sort, or software like Outreach.io that has some overlap in features (click to dial, especially).

Pros

  • Managing VM
  • Caller ID
  • Virtual TXT
  • Ease of phone management - easy to deploy; easy to relocate; and, easy to reassign extensions.
  • Ease of overall system management - one pane of glass for all our switches, phones, users, call routing etc.
  • Regular product updates and feature additions and/or refinements - listens to their customer base and provides clear upgrade paths.
  • Encourages third-party enhancements and affords ease of integration to broaden the range of their already robust IP telephony solution.

Cons

  • Integration with Insidesales/Salesforce/Outreach/etc.
  • RAM usage could be lower
  • Cross platform?
  • The admin panel does not work with browsers other than IE. I would love to see added browser support.
  • We sometimes need to re-use extensions when people move departments. It would be lovely to have a feature to reset a user account VM quickly. Currently, we have to set the user to extension only and then back to extension and VM to have it reset.

I attended the first ShoreTel installer class in Austin,TX. It was a week of intensive study with a live lab and having hands on experience made the class worthwhile. I have taken all of the sales courses and remaining technical courses either online or self study to keep costs down. I send my techs to the first installer course in Austin as I feel it gives them a solid foundation and most of teh other courses they have taken have been online.

Content is good and teh course material fills in any areas the instructor doesn't cover. Only pet peeve is the tests always have questions for things you don't learn from the course or course materials....

We had the phone system installed and running in less than a day. The vendor did much of the prep work ahead of time. As our business has expanded, implementing new sites has been a breeze. I recommend having a strong PoE infrastructure to cut down on wiring at the desk. Less wires = less chance of phone issues.

Alternatives Considered

I had no control over this but we are using 8x8 virtual office enterprise suite to get some of the functionality, mostly click to dial and contact handling. It's not exactly a competitor, but if you're looking for an easy way to utilize your company phone system remotely, I've had a great experience, including working from home for an entire month on it.
One thing I like about ShoreTel is that each upgrade is compatible with hardware used in previous versions. And Shoretel is still using Microsoft servers.

I believe that ShoreTel can be used by a minimum company size of about 25 to almost any size of a company and this can be achieved while the company grows, hence makes it pretty scalable when required. For companies which are smaller in size i.e. smaller than 25, I am not sure how useful it would be, it may be depending upon the type of business

Return on Investment

  • I've reached more leads and contacts than before because I can text to set appointments
  • Calculated total hard costs of hardware and deployment was fully repaid via long distance savings, reduced lines charges and consolidation in less than 18 months. Our ROI did not account for any other benefits other than hard Telco costs.
  • Providing extension dialing, universal voice mail and advanced feature sets (call routing, mobility, etc.) has made out telephone platform a productivity enhancer.
