8x8 Virtual Office Enterprise Suite

Some of the best scenarios are working remotely. It really allows you to get everything you need out of an office phone right from your computer/cell without any need for hardware. It's not great when you've already plugged in a dialer of some sort, or software like Outreach.io that has some overlap in features (click to dial, especially).

MiCloud Connect (formerly ShoreTel)

Well, I have been informed of newer cloud solutions that only rely on plugging the phones into the network and not needing any PRI or phone system on prem. This would make for a very inexpensive phone system. I am not sure how inter-office calls would work if the internet is down however.

  • Issue with fail over. Determination has to be made to fail-over to DR site. This could take an additional 45 mins to 1 hr. when decision is made. You can be down for some time already before they flip.
  • Looking for better choices of handsets/easier programming for off-net phones.

We have been using the ShoreTel solution for 14 years. We have gone from primarily analog phones to all IP. We have upgraded switches at least twice, and the server three times (we are now on a VMware based Windows 2012 R2 server). In that time we have had fewer than 6 outages, most of which simply required a server reboot to resolve. Our most disruptive outages have been the carrier, not ShoreTel

I attended the first ShoreTel installer class in Austin,TX. It was a week of intensive study with a live lab and having hands on experience made the class worthwhile. I have taken all of the sales courses and remaining technical courses either online or self study to keep costs down. I send my techs to the first installer course in Austin as I feel it gives them a solid foundation and most of teh other courses they have taken have been online.

Content is good and teh course material fills in any areas the instructor doesn't cover. Only pet peeve is the tests always have questions for things you don't learn from the course or course materials....

Be sure to involve all the members of your organization who currently know how your present phone system is used. Discuss current deficiencies and preferred features or call handling etc., then consult with the ShoreTel partner (assuming you are using one) to develop a configuration that servers your organization best. Hammering out these details before deploying the solution is key to a smooth deployment that requires little change afterwards.

Alternatives Considered

I had no control over this but we are using 8x8 virtual office enterprise suite to get some of the functionality, mostly click to dial and contact handling. It's not exactly a competitor, but if you're looking for an easy way to utilize your company phone system remotely, I've had a great experience, including working from home for an entire month on it.

Mitel and Toshiba for on-premises telephony. RingCentral and 8x8 for hosted. All of them have their strengths and weaknesses. For on-premises, there is no better solution than ShoreTel in my opinion. There are elements of the other hosted product I do appreciate like integration capabilities and reduced price per seat with comparable features. I believe that ShoreTel can be used by a minimum company size of about 25 to almost any size of a company and this can be achieved while the company grows, hence makes it pretty scalable when required. For companies which are smaller in size i.e. smaller than 25, I am not sure how useful it would be, it may be depending upon the type of business

  • Although this service costs us more per month than our PBX system did, we are actually handling more calls at a time that generate more sales per day. No quantifiable numbers.
