Any business that has workers in multiple locations or workers who are based out for the office for significant periods of time will really benefit from the 8x8 cloud-based system. Your direct line follows you around, but because of the Virtual Attendant, office hours and out of hours can be configured so that you only receive calls when you're "at work."

Confluence

Confluence is very good in situations where you need to share with the customer what are your instructions and procedures to resolve a specific problem. When asked, you only need to send him the knowledge-base article as a proof of work. We also use it to share this kind of information with the overseas team, as we are in a country and some of our coworkers live in another country far away.

Confluence

  • Pricing. As with all Atlassian products, the demo pricing of $10 is great. However, the hop to the next pricing tier can be hard to justify without a strong business case.
  • No folder support. Unlike SharePoint, there are no folders to organize documents under. This is a feature as the hierarchy is meant to be flexible, similar to a wiki site. Migrating from SharePoint or a file server on the other hand is a bit laborious.
  • Consistency across Atlassian Suite. Each Atlassian product has their own version of the system settings, which as an administrator of multiple products, makes it a bit of a headache to remember where Confluence keeps their SMTP settings, versus where JIRA keeps theirs, etc. Thankfully we have a Confluence page to document the differences.
  • OOTB features. Counterintuitive to my pluses, there are some major features that are lacking out-of-the-box. There is a marketplace to find add-ons, and using the RestAPI you can easily build your own if you have the time and expertise in-house, but it would be great if some features, like a reporting dashboard for JIRA, were built-in OOTB.

Overall I find Confluence to very pleasing to use. I don't feel like it's getting in the way of the task at hand. It just feels easy. Creating pages, editing pages, finding pages, sharing pages, exporting, printing, organizing all feel natural to me. Occasionally using certain macros can be cumbersome inside the WYSIWYG editor but for the most it's smooth.

In the time I have used 8x8 Virtual Office, the core system has been up and running almost flawlessly though we do have a slight performance degradation from time to time as is expected of cloud software. The one recurring issue for us is that the fax connection is not always functional for outbound messages. We usually have to retry three or four times to get the fax to connect reliably to the destination machine. Once connected, it's smooth sailing.

None of the features that are available slow down the application. The reports (even the ones with hundreds of records) complete very quickly and the web interface as well as the mobile application never struggle to load or complete a task. The analytics will sometimes take some time to reflect the online status of users but it is to be expected due to connection speeds.

We never worked against the tide while using Confluence. Everything loads considerably fast, even media components like videos (hosted on the platform or embed external videos from Youtube, for example). We are not using heavy media components a lot, but in the rare occasion we happen to use one we have no problems whatsoever.

I have not had a lot of support experiences with Atlassian, but of the few I have, I wasn't very satisfied with the results. I found that multiple people would respond to the issue at various stages, requiring re-communication (even though the support system stores everything and shows it to both them and you). Often responses came at odd hours, resulting in 24+ hour turnaround on basic responses, even if you respond right away. Support often asks you to do things which require downtime, and don't seem sympathetic if your organization requires that downtime to be done off-hours. This makes it difficult to resolve issues in a timely manner, if at all.I must note that I have not opened a support incident with them in close to 2 years, and it's my understanding from colleagues that there has been much improvement. My comments and ratings reflect my older experiences.

Although RingCentral and 8x8 provider similar offerings, I find the pricing and ease of use more appealing to 8x8. I also like the US-based customer support that 8x8 offers. I feel the feature set for Vonage for Business is not as strong as either RingCentral or 8x8. For smaller businesses needing less than 50 extensions or a large number of remote teleworkers, 8x8 has great price points and features compared to Ring Central. For businesses needing more than 100 extensions, 8x8 may not be the best-fit cost wise.

For our needs, Confluence absolutely blew both SharePoint and Google Docs out of the water. We were able to get more granular security than with SharePoint while maintaining the collaborative tool sets found in both SharePoint and Google Docs. Additionally, the integration into tools we already had in place, rather than needing to jerry-rig a solution that would "work", was a critical deciding factor.

We've had periods where our organization has grown a considerable amount and we have had no issues in scaling our communications with 8x8. The number of possible extensions that we can use is far more than we expect to go through in a very long time. The only complaint that I have is a very minor inconvenience for me where I have to download activation codes for each phone. I would prefer to have the phones automatically activated as soon as they are plugged in.

  • We broke even.
  • After the initial trial I switched to another service that was more friendly towards non-profits in that they offered discounts and other perks.
  • I just wish I would have had other options to choose from initially without having to be auto enrolled, then cancel the service and go out and find an alternative that worked for us.

Confluence

  • Confluence has greatly improved our internal processes for projects and planning. We used to be a culture that emailed word docs back and forth, or just stored them in a common network area before Confluence (the stone age I know!). We're more efficient due to this now.
  • We've used Confluence to create more of an importance on detailed documentation and notes on our environment (servers, applications, etc.). The amount of valuable documentation that we have is orders of magnitude more than we had pre-Confluence.
