8x8 Virtual Office

It works great in a virtual office environment like we have where 100% of the company works from home. It is convenient to have us all on the same system and not using our cell phones. Since it’s reliant on internet though, if an office was all in one place, it may not make sense.

Avaya

Good for the basics. It's great for connecting users and department for quick and easy voice communication. Users have no issues quickly picking up how to use everything as needed. It leaves something to be desired in both the initial setup (took time and was complicated) and some of the admin features available on the back-end.

Pros

  • Call Queue
  • Voicemail
  • Internal Communications

  • Contact center solutions are very feature rich allowing several channels of communications to customers.
  • Redundancy configurations, high availability, and virtualization make it a very robust and secure voice platform.
  • With centralised licensing, proactive voice quality monitoring, and extended diagnostic features, it’s easy to keep everything running smoothly in your mid-market company.
  • You can [use] the UC system that works for you with up to 50% less memory required to grow your communication network with your business. There are plenty of rich APIs available to integrate with your system too, so you can design the strategy your business needs.

Cons

  • I think the voicemail system could use a little work. It is robust but the menus are a bit confusing. It is hard to know if a different recorded message is set to play or not.

  • AVAYA's turn around time on major and minor deployments. SOW's take way to long.

Based on their poor customer service and lack of warranty replacement, I would not recommend or use 8x8.

Oddly enough I have been impressed with the IP Office platform so much that I have integrated one into my home. My wife was not happy with it initially but once she started using it she was very happy with the results. It helped that I programmed it to work just like a home phone but with features and options that I can utilize remotely. I would be more than happy to put an AVAYA IP Office against any other phone system on the market, and let you be the judge.

I find Avaya easy to use but I am not a beginner. I think it is much more difficult for beginners unless the administrator has some basic programming skills. The system is getting more difficult to use but I enjoy learning and haven't found myself stumped yet.

The tech support that I have received has been outstanding. My only complaint is at times the support is hard to understand due to offshore technicians.

Alternatives Considered

At that time other vendors did not have a virtual attendant feature, thus 8x8 was leading edge.

Mitel offers a wide range of UC platforms and call controllers however their flagship product appears to be MiVoice Business and MiCollab, while Avaya offers Aura for large organisations and IP Office for small business and mid-market segments. Avaya is far better at PC applications or unified messaging. NEC is better for hospitality.

Return on Investment

  • The impact on my business was a positive one. I was trying to operate with 2 cell phones and it just wasn't working. I needed a desk phone and a number that would stay the same for the business. I can also add more lines as we grow and they can be anywhere with an internet connection. As a small business, I work primarily out of my home office and my employees can do the same with this system.

  • Managed to reduce our communication costs by 60% through the adoption of VoIP for interbranch calls at no charge. It's cheaper SIP for long distance calls.
