This is great for small to medium businesses, giving you more freedom to be where you need to be and not always glued to the office. Larger companies can benefit from the fact that they can have multiple office locations all tied to the same system. Businesses that need a more personal touch may not need all the features that the Virtual Office provides.

Digium Asterisk

Digium Asterisk is well suited for a city government as a communications solution for internal and external use. Other options like PBX are more expensive and hard to escalate. VoIP makes it easier to use the communications infrastructure instead that already exists rather than having to wire every phone when the solution is a digital or analog phone. In my city, government offices are not in the same place, which makes it harder to communicate everything together.

Pros

8x8 Virtual Office

  • Conference call feature is great. We have created multiple conference bridges, we even have one tied to our virtual attendant.
  • We like the flexibility of the auto attendant and being able to have more than one profile saved that we can change as needed
  • Having Virtual office was especially great when hurricane Irma came through last year and our office had no power, it allowed us to continue to operate from our cell phones without the customer realizing there was anything different.

  • I appreciate the fact that is based on open source code.
  • The company provides hardware to implement a specific solution for your needs.
  • Cheaper than any other options as a VoIP system. You can use softphones which lowers the price of the project.
  • The scalability of the solution can be well achieved with the right hardware.

Cons

8x8 Virtual Office

  • The mobile app is good but can be too much at times, almost taking over the phone.
  • It would be nice if there was a way that when a voicemail is sent via email that it could mark it as listened to once the email has been opened.
  • The setup for the auto attendant is very intuitive, granted it works well once set up.
  • It would be nice if a call placed on hold could be picked up by another extension

  • It's hard to find certified people in the area that I live in.
  • The fact of relying on open source makes the project hard to sell to the upper management.
  • The vendor is the only one who supplies the hardware to make it work. You can't find it anywhere else.

Alternatives Considered

8x8 Virtual Office

Only 8x8 offers a desktop phone solution, call center solution and equipment. Having one provider makes things much easier for all and allows for one call if there is an issue.

[Based on] my experience, we initially had to deal with Avaya PBXs, the same applies to client instrumentation (telephones, etc.). Surely we are talking about a product much more "business-like", but the management and implementation has a high cost and is not as simple as it can be (or better) with Asterisk.

Return on Investment

8x8 Virtual Office

  • While it is more expensive to have a cloud system the advantages are improved up time, free upgrades and enhancements and one neck to choke should you have a problem (given we use there desktop system, call center system and their physical Polycom phones.
