8x8 Virtual Office

This is great for small to medium businesses, giving you more freedom to be where you need to be and not always glued to the office. Larger companies can benefit from the fact that they can have multiple office locations all tied to the same system. Businesses that need a more personal touch may not need all the features that the Virtual Office provides.

Google Voice

Google Voice is free, for the most part, and aside from the intricacies of setup, very easy to use. I don't know how scalable it is for a larger organization, but I don't see why it wouldn't work, if for some reason you wanted to use Google Voice instead of traditional cell phones for employees.

Pros

8x8 Virtual Office

  • All services (Chat, Meeting, Phones) all in one application
  • 8x8 has been very flexible to work with as an organization and don't seem to be committed to strict arbitrary policies.
  • Does not require a VPN connection to use their solution.

Google Voice

  • Rings multiple lines to one phone
  • Text message from browser
  • Sends voicemails to email

Cons

8x8 Virtual Office

  • I think the 8x8 mobile app for Android could be more visually appealing. More use of color, contrast, etc.
  • SMS service should not require a subscription.
  • Call quality is sometimes questionable. App has glitches where it freezes at times.

Google Voice

  • Voice seems like an unwanted appendage to the Google ecosystem, lacking much integration outside of Hangouts. When Google stated they would be refocusing Hangouts they were in essence threatening how I manage my phone system.
  • Voice has virtually no Gmail integration. I would love being able to have my incoming calls and transcribed voicemails show up in Gmail.

Based on their poor customer service and lack of warranty replacement, I would not recommend or use 8x8.

I'm a big fan of Google and the products that they innovate. I will use Google Voice for as long as they keep it alive.

Alternatives Considered

8x8 Virtual Office

We liked 8x8's look and feel and overall back-end management more than the other vendors we reviewed, such as EvolveIP, Cisco and other hosted options (Avaya, Asterisk)

Google Voice

Asterisk is a more fully featured VOIP system which enables an office phone system; direct comparison is useful only if you examine the voicemail management capabilities. Features that favor Google Voice include the automatic voice-to-text translation and the native app - which drastically decrease the time required to manage a message queue. Asterisk has the ability to show the messages in a dashboard, download the messages or have them emailed to you; but that extra bit of translation is very effective. Also, Asterisk does not have a native app, though independant developers and SaaS providers may offer management apps

Return on Investment

8x8 Virtual Office

  • I didn't make the decision to use the service but our SF office uses it daily.
Daniel Cameron profile photo

Google Voice

  • This is primarily a way to divorce /obfuscate a personal phone number from a work phone number - yet still only have a single destination device. It is highly effective.
  • Contact response customization is excellent for customer service
  • Employees are much more efficient at managing their missed calls - if they had to rely on pushing buttons on their phone ("press 1 to replay message") it would take *much* more time to respond.
