8x8 Virtual Office

Best suited for basic VoIP service (desk phones) in either a local office or small business with multiple locations. Not very well suited for a large corporation needing complex call routing or multiple menu call flows. Occasional (manual) call recording works fine, but not particularly well setup for always-on recording due to storage limitations and no ability to auto-archive onto a cloud storage service. Mobile is limited as well, works just fine for call-forwarding but would not recommend as the primary usage of system. So if you're looking for a traditional "land-line" office phone system it works great, and for the price it's hard to beat, but only with a contract discount... and the contracts are difficult if not impossible to get out of w/o paying high early termination fees.

Google Voice

Small business owners and individuals looking for an affordable phone plan and a new number - this is the perfect solution. I much prefer Google Voice & Hangouts over Skype for a myriad of reasons including call quality and phone app implementation. If you have more than one person trying to share the same number you may want to consider an alternative.

Pros

  • Faxes and voicemail -- the quick sending of both to email makes for a very reliable method of not only processing, but also storing them as attachments which is vital.
  • Call reflecting from desk to cell phone is instantaneous, and very useful whenever one is away from the office but still needs to get client calls.
  • Very high-quality audio typically indistinguishable from a landline, in a much more affordable problem sliding package.

  • What GV does well is provide a free and complete phone service for any business. I like that it is a Google Service so it is integrated with countless other Google Services I use on a daily basis.
  • I have multiple GV phone numbers as contact numbers on multiple websites I developed and managed myself. Being able to search phone numbers for vanity alpha-numeric numbers is not just good branding, but it offers yet another free service that can be used for each site/project in a myriad of ways.

Cons

  • I think the 8x8 mobile app for Android could be more visually appealing. More use of color, contrast, etc.
  • SMS service should not require a subscription.
  • Call quality is sometimes questionable. App has glitches where it freezes at times.

  • Lag. No matter how fast the Internet connection, there is always about a half second, or more, of lag.
  • I forget the term, but GV lacks the two-way connection of regular land lines and mobile phones. For example, you need to wait for someone to finish speaking before you do; otherwise, your voice will not transmit to them, over theirs. It is akin to using a walkie-talkie in that you have to wait. I alert anyone I speak with of this, so we can patiently communicate, but it would be ideal if it were two-way, as I mentioned.
  • Drops. I am sure this is an Internet issue, not GV, but with even an instant drop in Internet, the call is dropped.

Based on their poor customer service and lack of warranty replacement, I would not recommend or use 8x8.

It can definitely help us in a lot of ways, especially concerning customer care and new employee adjustment when we acquire a new office far away, but I don't think we use it to its full potential just yet

It is a pretty seamless program to transfer to, even for people who either have little experience with these programs or people who were stuck on Skype

Alternatives Considered

With Onebox, our employees had to use their own cell phones for their work calls. Additionally, there was no call queue function available at the time. Instead, all cell phones would ring at once, and it was a mad dash to who would answer. 8x8 has way more robust features to offer a growing company.

It is more affordable than Skype for Business was. It is also more user-friendly as we have an older employee base

Return on Investment

  • Our customers are able to get ahold of us easily.
  • Very little downtime.
  • Support help can be lengthy when calling in which takes time away from the work day.

  • It's saved us money by not having to get a paid service.
