If you need a flexible and cost effective solution for faxing, then 8x8 may be an option for you if you are a small business, startup or non-profit organization that doesn't require high quality of service (QoS) or rarely sends out faxes.

Jabber

Jabber is great for organizations that have a number of remote workers (whether it's full-time or a few days a week) so that everyone can keep in touch more regularly than having to send numerous emails. It works really well for laptop/desktop computers, but I don't think it works well when traveling because it's more difficult to use when on the road. It also really works well if it is integrated with the organization's phone and calendar services. It loses its productivity if it's used only for instant messaging.

Pros

  • I haven't had any issues with it since it was installed, so I don't have any interactions with customer service really. The reliability has been exceptional.

  • In general, call quality is really good using Jabber. Of course it is dependent on your network or internet connection speed if used remotely, but it's much better than many other products we looked at under the same circumstances. Most of the time we can't tell when someone is working remotely over the VPN using Jabber.
  • The user interface is easy to use and quickly adopted by users.
  • The search function for contacts is quick and accurate.

  • The back end of Jabber and creating the proper profiles in CUCM can be frustrating. Often the solution is easy e.g.: "check this box or uncheck this box" however actually finding these areas in the CUCM profiles can be difficult. Also, the setup is not always straight forward, one profile could have certain settings and the next could have completely different settings and they both work. It makes trouble shooting a little difficult.
  • Mobile app - When using the Jabber app and using video if you need to swipe between screens you lose the video window to see the chat window. It would be useful if the video screen would shrink down and be visible the entire time you are on the call.
  • Share screen - sharing screens between MAC and Windows users is not possible with just the Jabber client, you must make it a WebEx in order to receive full functionality.

Requires too much technical assistance to users, get more calls for supporting Jabber than other. A lot of people admit they don't use the product anymore after having to call tech support several times. They would rather pick up and use their iPhone.

Even with the Jabber client, Cisco support is outstanding, with the knowledge and quick response you would expect from them. Their engineers understand their products and our issues are usually addressed quickly and by the same person we originally connect with instead of getting passed to additional people. Follow-up is good too. Their support is thorough.

At that time other vendors did not have a virtual attendant feature, thus 8x8 was leading edge.

Jabber is great for INTERNAL communication. Talking within the organization to users, finding their number, and things along those lines. Slack is more based on the user and doesn't care if you are in the organization or across the world. I guess it all depends on how you want to use your communication tool. If you want employees only talking to one another, then Jabber is great. If you collaborate with other organizations outside of yours then you may want to look at Slack.
