In a business environment where you want a phone setup with a number, or a virtual setup on a desktop, 8x8 is the way to go. The virtual app is really great! It has a Do Not Disturb (DND) mode for when you're busy and you can just use the computers config (mic and sound) to run it. Awesome!

MiCloud Connect

Shoretel Sky is well suited for our company due to being flexible to the unique configurations at each of our branches. Each branch has different call flows set up that are easily manageable using the portal. This is not a canned system that everyone has to adapt to which makes it very easy to work with.

Pros

  • No issues purchasing the Cisco SPA-122 and SPA-8000 devices.
  • No issues setting up the Cisco SPA-122 and SPA-8000 devices.
  • Cheaper to go with 8x8 service and the Cisco SPA-122 or Cisco SPA-8000 devices than hosting GFI Faxmaker 14 yourself.
  • Four digit extension dialing between branches and being able to transfer calls between branches works great.
  • Customer service is always very helpful with any problems.
  • The Phone Assistant is very easy to use and has a lot of features.

Cons

  • Frequent line congestion/noise and disconnect with the Cisco SPA-122 and Cisco-8000 devices which require you to restart the devices daily
  • Lack of concern from Customer Support
  • Defective equipment for residential customers isn't covered under warranty replacement.
  • Not applicable

The system has gone down on us MULTIPLE times. We asked them to move us to a different cluster. Shoretel declined. Basically we had problems or outages every month of the year from June 2012 to date. Our old phone system was just that: OLD, no bells or whistles. But it was up every day and I never had to think about it much until it was time for an upgrade. That's how I want Shoretel to be. I want it so reliable that I never have to think about it.

I attended the first ShoreTel installer class in Austin,TX. It was a week of intensive study with a live lab and having hands on experience made the class worthwhile. I have taken all of the sales courses and remaining technical courses either online or self study to keep costs down. I send my techs to the first installer course in Austin as I feel it gives them a solid foundation and most of teh other courses they have taken have been online.

Content is good and teh course material fills in any areas the instructor doesn't cover. Only pet peeve is the tests always have questions for things you don't learn from the course or course materials....

We worked with a third party vendor who set up the system and assisted in rolling it out. All of the configuration worked out of the box and has been running without issue since it was installed. We got great training and the system was very easy to manage and teach to new users.

Alternatives Considered

GFI Faxmaker/Mail Essentials 14 is more reliable and has better customer support than using the Cisco SPA-122 and Cisco SPA-8000 devices with 8x8, when you send out 200-500 faxes daily. 8x8 costs significantly less than GFI Faxmaker/Mail Essentials 14
Much more user friendly/intuitive, better software experience and does not have the multitude of hardware failures that we experienced under Avaya's product.

I believe that ShoreTel can be used by a minimum company size of about 25 to almost any size of a company and this can be achieved while the company grows, hence makes it pretty scalable when required. For companies which are smaller in size i.e. smaller than 25, I am not sure how useful it would be, it may be depending upon the type of business

Return on Investment

  • 8x8 Customer Service was awful. We received no ROI or valuable knowledge from them.
  • 8x8 saved us about $80 a month in the 2 months we used them.
  • Fax Support was less stringent and overall IT overhead was reduced as we didn't have to check out a Faxmaker server or service every couple of hours.
  • Although this service costs us more per month than our PBX system did, we are actually handling more calls at a time that generate more sales per day. No quantifiable numbers.
