Great as a virtual attendant so as to support distributed teams, but not for a conference, video meetings, and screen shares yet.

The system does more than I've even had the pleasure to implement. I appreciate the staff and the system. It's stable and dynamic enough to meet any companies needs.

Pros

  • Portability! Having an "office phone" built into my laptop is unbelievably convenient. I can be at a coffee shop, on the road, at home, etc. and never miss a call.
  • Reliability. Bugs in the software seem to be VERY few and far between.
  • Customer service. When we had to reach out to 8x8 when I worked in support, the reps we worked with were very responsive and always available. That's always a huge plus when working with software.
  • System uptime is tremendous, I almost forget it exists on my server rack.
  • Desktop software is very easy to learn, I can train new receptionists within a few minutes and they don't have to memorize extensions or rely on a sheet of numbers
  • Call recording works well, I am able to find calls based on a number of criteria and it finds the calls fast and I can easily export them for use.

Cons

  • Their Desktop app doesn't always work correctly. Sometimes callers, cannot hear us and vice versa when the desktop app is used.
  • There are a few interfaces for working with the system and it can be daunting to learn
  • They charge quite a bit annually and if you miss an update they charge you additional fees to catch up.

Alternatives Considered

I have evaluated a couple different IP phone systems and the others needed the user to configure their router and do things on their end in order for the phones to work. With 8x8, it was simply plug and play.

Return on Investment

  • It has neither had a positive or negative impact.
  • Good call tracking and automated systems allows for less staff and accurate metrics
