Good for letting your investors, employees and others know at a glance how your company is doing. The interface is clean and organized well. I just wish more of the app's functionality was available for testing and implementation. "Coming soon" is not really encouraging when we already have been waiting for a year or more.

IBM Cognos

IBM Cognos is well suited when you are implementing with compatible software like Costpoint and other Deltek products, this will lead to great integration and result in the wonderful presentation of data for your reporting requirement. However, IBM Cognos is not well suited when being implemented with non-Deltek software as this will lead to challenges in integration and will not produce ideal reporting.

Pros

  • Grouping several apps in one place for easy viewing.
  • Clean dashboard interface that looks uncluttered when viewing several apps at once.
  • Setting up the apps is a breeze when the platform supports them.

  • It provides a graphic user interface for report authoring, which is easy to learn and straightforward to understand. It is easy to develop a report if authors have good understanding of data.
  • The data pipelining framework is stable. It didn't crash by connection failure, etc.
  • Cognos is designed for a report distribution to multiple analytics consumers. Report authors can set up distribution configurations with detailed conditions.
  • Authoring environment is designed to well adopt complicated formats of data sources.

Cons

  • Integration with apps that are listed. Some of them are not supported yet and it seems the wait is taking longer than I'd like.
  • iPhone support. It would be nice to have this in the app store. Not available as of 04/25/2018.

  • Web-based authoring environment is slow, compared to Desktop based environment. It gets slower if the size of data gets bigger.
  • Congas is best when we create reports using coded data based on relational databases. Since a lot of clinical data are unstructured formatted, it may be required of good data wrangling function to include them into the reports.
  • Chart types and look and feel configuration flexibility are limited, especially compared to competitors such as Tableau. They are not terribly ugly, but not faulty looking with the default setting.

For an existing solution, renewing licenses does provide a good return on investment. Additionally, while rolling out scorecards and dashboards with little adhoc capabilities, to end users, cognos is very easily scalable. It also allows to create a solution that has a mix of OLAP and relational data-sources, which is a limitation with other tools. Synchronizing with existing security setup is easy too.

From the Developer side, it can initially seem impenetrable to try to use some of the development tools, such as Framework Manager and the more advanced features of Report Studio. Once familiar with the organization of the interface, the learning curve evens out quickly and it becomes rather straightforward to work with. From the End User side, navigating to a report or dashboard is as simple as clicking through the directory structure. With a little poking around in Cognos Workspace, it shouldn't take long to figure out how to customize a dashboard to their own liking

In the right architecture, the performance of Cognos is great. We find that our firewalls and VPNs limit the performance, but are a necessary evil.

Support was helpful in the beginning but no longer needed because I didn't use the software as much. The experience that I did have with support was very friendly but not enough to give a good review. If the support team was called for initial setup, video chat or messenger app was used.

I really cannot honestly rate the technical support of IBM, since we are getting our support through our SAS provider.

The online courses they offer are thorough and presented in such a way that someone who isn't already familiar with the general design methodologies used in this field will be capable of making a good design. The training environments are provided as a fully self contained virtual machine with everything needed already to create the environments. We've had some persisting issues with the environments becoming unavailable, but support has been responsive when these issues arise and straightening them out for us

No real problems with the implementations. Most of the issues we have are a matter of the limited resources of the smaller VMs and only keeping the services that we need for a specific demo turned on. This should not be a problem on a standard production server

Alternatives Considered

I actually chose QuickBooks (currently using) and Method (used for a month) before deciding that 9 Spokes is just good for looking at a few apps in one place. I'll keep checking back with them to see if they have improved. I wouldn't be surprised if 9 Spokes improves their product within the next 6-12 months.

We considered several major commercial visualization and dashboarding tools and decided to adopt Tableau and Cognos. We're a healthcare delivery organization and security and privacy of patient data are a critical feature. For that reason, we preferred a well recognized and already proven products rather than a non-guaranteed brand/new product. Congos is not the richest functioned tool but provided stable performance with great business support.

The Cognos architecture is well suited for scalability. However, the architecture must be designed with scalability in mind from day one of the implementation. We recently upgraded from 10.1 to 10.2.1 and took the opportunity to revamp our architecture. It is now poised for future growth and scalability.

  • Increased efficiency within the HR department. We can run our own reports on demand.
  • Better customer service, when reports are requested by internal or external customers, they can be delivered within 24 hours of the request. When we relied on our IT department for reports, this was never the case
