Good for letting your investors, employees and others know at a glance how your company is doing. The interface is clean and organized well. I just wish more of the app's functionality was available for testing and implementation. "Coming soon" is not really encouraging when we already have been waiting for a year or more.

It is well suited for just about everything that I have seen or run into. There are some cases with data from sources like Essbase (Hyperion) and other sources where you may need an adapter, but IBI has adapters available for just about everything you can think of. I also love the ability to run either straight WebFocus code or SQL code.

Pros

  • Grouping several apps in one place for easy viewing.
  • Clean dashboard interface that looks uncluttered when viewing several apps at once.
  • Setting up the apps is a breeze when the platform supports them.
No photo available
  • Customizable reporting - strength for any data needs to customize to business practices
  • Integration with existing data systems - important to not re-invent the wheel
  • Expertise and support - ability to find and implement solution details for various users

Cons

  • Integration with apps that are listed. Some of them are not supported yet and it seems the wait is taking longer than I'd like.
  • iPhone support. It would be nice to have this in the app store. Not available as of 04/25/2018.

  • The newest versions of WebFOCUS have an unnecessarily complicated security layout that makes configuration difficult to accomplish without bringing in the vendor for installs.
  • This software tries to cover too many bases allowing you to switch from writing code manually to creating reports using only GUI tools. This sometimes complicates screens and functionality where the two methods don't always work well together. -though its nice to have the choice.
  • The sales force is not as top notch as many software companies

I have seen demos of WebFOCUS version 8 but haven't used it more. It looks more promising than the previous versions like 6 and 7.

Best BI tool/product I have used. The others don't compare overall. Some can look fancier, but when you actually use them with large data and data from numerous systems/sources that is where most of the competition falls away. I also don't like downtime. I have basically none for a large user base with WebFocus. Even SAP Crystal Reports went down for 4 days once - 4 days because the admin password got locked out due to a glitch and we had zero reports for 4 days. WebFocus has never had more than a few minutes of downtime. It's like a tank that just keeps rolling. There is no other choice for reliable BI.

Support was helpful in the beginning but no longer needed because I didn't use the software as much. The experience that I did have with support was very friendly but not enough to give a good review. If the support team was called for initial setup, video chat or messenger app was used.

They have extremely knowledgeable techs that I have worked with over the years. Some have actually become really good friends of mine. I see them often at local user groups and when we show them how we are using their tools to save millions of dollars throughout the company

Plan ahead on what data will be accessible and the type of security required on the database and if you will want to use security that is built into the software. It is worth consulting with the vendor on what your plan is and how they recommend you proceed in order to get results you are happy with.

Breadth of Deployment

Our organization has about 100 developers distributing reports to an audience of several thousand. In addition there are hundreds of report launch pages on the company's intranet that were created by the various departments that use the tool. The tools is leveraged by finance, engineering, marketing, labor relations, operations, and technical services.

Alternatives Considered

I actually chose QuickBooks (currently using) and Method (used for a month) before deciding that 9 Spokes is just good for looking at a few apps in one place. I'll keep checking back with them to see if they have improved. I wouldn't be surprised if 9 Spokes improves their product within the next 6-12 months.

The reason we chose WebFOCUS is because it seemed the easiest to use to create great reporting products. Also, we really liked that the code is transparent and readily available. We were confident in Information Builder's longevity and believed that ultimately, our staff would prefer working with it's integrated, drag and drop tools over Microsoft's less cohesive approach.

Collaboration and Sharing

9 Spokes7.0

Access control capabilities are OK. Ease of sharing is great because the app design is made special for that purpose. I haven't dove that far into the app enough to generate reports. Formatting is very flexible because 9 Spokes allows the user to customize how the info is displayed. Security or lack thereof is not a factor for me so I am unable to give feedback on security.

WebFOCUS is very good at sharing data amongst teams and multiple users, it allows you to easily distribute emails and reporting massively. What's even better, it allows it with a very easy to set up Report Caster. It also provides you with a very interactive way to build your multiple reports and emails. The bursting functionality is also one very nice edge to distribute reporting for different levels on the same data

Data Integration

I gave 9 Spokes a five because the range of data sources is minimal. Ease of merging data from disparate sources is pretty good for the ones they do support. I just want to have more apps available for arranging on their nice looking interface. Perhaps next year my review for 9 Spokes will be better than 5

Version 7 was clunky and not at all easy to set up different connections to different DB handlers (DB2, Mainframe, Oracle, etc). Version 8 did make it easier to set up different connections and access it better, although being able to query this information and create live demos on it for your reporting preview, may become hard to do since sometimes it's hard to pull only a few records.

Return on Investment

No answers on this topic
  • We are not yet a success story. Though we've been implementing WebFOCUS for over a year, we have very few products in our Production portal. Of course, this is not all the responsibility of Information Builders, but we were ill-advised by our 'training coordinator' in our training of staff and coming up to speed with the tools has been very slow.
  • Once skilled analysts and professional IT staff achieve a grasp of the products, they are able to very quickly create polished and well-received products.
  • The DW/BI project has helped us to establish standards and protocols of communication that will allow us to more quickly meet knowledge transfer requirements
