Good for letting your investors, employees and others know at a glance how your company is doing. The interface is clean and organized well. I just wish more of the app's functionality was available for testing and implementation. "Coming soon" is not really encouraging when we already have been waiting for a year or more.

Tableau Public

Generating data-based reports for donors or board of directors. However, note that the public version should not be used for any data that you would like to keep private. Also good for creating unique data visualizations to use in presentations, or simpler visualizations to use in the text of a blog post or in a social media post.

Pros

  • Grouping several apps in one place for easy viewing.
  • Clean dashboard interface that looks uncluttered when viewing several apps at once.
  • Setting up the apps is a breeze when the platform supports them.

  • Generates heat maps to segment product performance and volumes for each state if needed. This helps to allocate focuses on growth opportunities for particular states.
  • Quickly reads large files and increases productivity exponentially.
  • User interface is simple to use - great supporting resources if you're not understanding a specific area.

Cons

  • Integration with apps that are listed. Some of them are not supported yet and it seems the wait is taking longer than I'd like.
  • iPhone support. It would be nice to have this in the app store. Not available as of 04/25/2018.

  • Simpler first time integration. Labor intensive first steps in order to get data to operate effectively. I needed to keep re-verifying numbers until I felt the integration was operating correctly.

In the end, Tableau continues to innovate and deliver new functionality every year. Technical support is good, they also provide user forum(s) where experienced users share their knowledge and insights, as well as assist newer users with specific questions. This space (Business Intelligence) continues to grow and is very competitive with new vendors and products coming out all the time. That said, we've yet to see a product that can match Tableau.

By far the most easy to use and intuitive user interface I've seen with any tool.

Support

Support was helpful in the beginning but no longer needed because I didn't use the software as much. The experience that I did have with support was very friendly but not enough to give a good review. If the support team was called for initial setup, video chat or messenger app was used.

The Tableau support team is responsive and easy to work with. Tableau also provides user forums, where experienced users can help new users with their questions and best practice ideas. Documentation is solid as well.

I found it sufficient, and fast. I could easily "kick the tires" with Tableau on my data so I got up and running fast.

Start at the end and work backward. Identify the business case / issue and questions the end users have, then identify the data needed, and where to get it.

We use Tableau internally across the organization, as well as provide a suite of developed visualizations to K-12 Education and Government customers across the United States.

Alternatives Considered

I actually chose QuickBooks (currently using) and Method (used for a month) before deciding that 9 Spokes is just good for looking at a few apps in one place. I'll keep checking back with them to see if they have improved. I wouldn't be surprised if 9 Spokes improves their product within the next 6-12 months.

Salesforce can be a black box when it comes to CRM and even though Tableau isnt a CRM program our organization started using it for customer relations

Collaboration and Sharing

9 Spokes7.0

Access control capabilities are OK. Ease of sharing is great because the app design is made special for that purpose. I haven't dove that far into the app enough to generate reports. Formatting is very flexible because 9 Spokes allows the user to customize how the info is displayed. Security or lack thereof is not a factor for me so I am unable to give feedback on security.

We had no real developers but setting up security was very easy. Again, like I have mentioned, the customization is very easy and the up-time for merging was not long at all. I think the reporting distribution was the biggest key as that is what the client liked the most from it.

Data Integration

9 Spokes5.0
Based on 1 answer
I gave 9 Spokes a five because the range of data sources is minimal. Ease of merging data from disparate sources is pretty good for the ones they do support. I just want to have more apps available for arranging on their nice looking interface. Perhaps next year my review for 9 Spokes will be better than 5

The ease of merging data from new or old systems is easily managed. As long as there is a reasonable template for source information as well as reasonable uses of characters and spaces, the information does merge and read appropriately. For product SKUs with four levels of information (ranging around 4,000 parts) and five years of historical data for each level it takes 4-5 hours to integrate.

Return on Investment

  • Quick visualizations.
  • Clean design. If you are a fan of Edward Tufte or Stephen Few, then you favor a lean, clean look. That seems to be Tableau's default. I appreciate that.
