IBM POWER8 Servers

Do you run Windows loads? Are those loads exclusive to Windows? If yes, that's the only case where you cannot take advantage of POWER8 Systems. For all the other cases, workloads run better on POWER8. It doesn't matter if they are OLTP or web servers, in AIX, IBM i or Linux (Big Endian OR Little Endian), POWER8 Systems can run it. For HPC or AI cases where you need powerful GPU-CPU communication, POWER8 Machines have you covered as well, boasting better training times for AI models.

Pure Storage FlashBlade

Since implementing FlashBlade into our backup infrastructure, the speed at which the backups complete on a nightly basis has increased tremendously. On the reverse, the time it takes to restore from the FlashBlade is very minimal. Couple the FlashBlade with a FlashArray and the backup and restores are insanely fast. The FlashBlade works well in our scenario as a backup target/ It would not work so well as a standard SAN scenario. While it would be fast, the cost does not make it feasible.

Pure Storage FlashBlade

  • Speed. We are seeing large transactions take very little time.
  • Upgrades- In-place upgrades of both hardware and software are extremely easy.
  • Ease of use- I have several engineers working on this and from setup to day to day operations it is extremely easy to maintain.

Cons

IBM POWER8 Servers

  • The noise levels for the scale-out machines are too much for small offices.

Pure Storage FlashBlade

  • When reporting out a user has exceeded there quote, it only references the UID. It would certainly be nice it calls out the UID name that is clearly present in the Dashboard.
  • The ability to determine a snapshot total size would be helpful.
  • Proactive reachout to discuss new versions and assist in planning the upgrade would be a key win.

Without exception, the contacts with support have been quick and extremely knowledgeable. I do not fear getting an underqualified engineer to assess or work on my arrays. In addition to this support structure, the sales engineers are top notch as well.

IBM POWER8 Servers

When deciding on servers to run our critical applications IBM Power systems are always at the top of our list. The tradition of reliability, performance and security is unmatched in the industry. We have a large VMware environment running x86 servers but they mainly support windows based applications like exchange

Pure Storage FlashBlade

The NetApp a800 we tested was 14% faster than Pure FlashBlade with NFS workloads. However, NetApp lacked ease of administration and performing simple tasks such as creating multiple NFS volumes required scripting from the command line. Our flashblade contained 15 baldes and our NetApp was a clustered pair with each half containing 24 nvme devices.

Return on Investment

IBM POWER8 Servers

  • POWER8 Machines have allowed our customers to stay current on hardware and software, and to comply with the security standards required for communication.
  • Newer and faster machines have solved bottlenecks in our customers' workflows, meeting their growing demands.
  • POWER8 Introduces support for little endian Linux, which solves a problem some customers had when migrating to POWER8 Systems (the specific code that had endian-ness dependencies).

Pure Storage FlashBlade

  • We were able to consolidate 5 different storage platforms of lesser performance onto a single Flashblade and achieve much, much lower latency and higher throughput.
  • We've been able to reduce the amount of training and configuration required to just Pure Flashblade, instead of 5 different vendors and products.
  • In addition to our core use cases, Flashblade has capabilities that we are pursuing for some new projects, i.e. analytics data store and the object store features.
