VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

I believe IBM Cloud is well suited for individuals who know their product but not so much for cloud strategy. IBM helps us accelerate and plan the cloud journey and allows us to scale. I wouldn't recommend the IBM Cloud if you know how to scale and distribute the servers world wide.

Kernel-based Virtual Machine

Kernel-based Virtual Machine is very well suited when one needs a single-node virtualization host or needs to build a complex demo setting on their own notebook (e.g. when demonstrating solutions to a customer).

Pros

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

  • The performance is top notch. Our on-prem environment was always suffering from lag and general sluggishness. With IBM running everything, it's much smoother.
  • It's always up to date. Our previous environment was always lacking the latest updates and security features. Our audit department enjoys having the peace of mind that everything is up to date.
  • They handle the security of the environment. It allows our security team to focus on higher priority issues. They dont have to worry about making sure our systems are secured.

Usability

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud 8.2

It is easy to use and setting it up is simple. The only con is that the pricing is a little bit high as well as documentation is a little low; so we had to do some personal learning to be able to fully utilize the product, or hop on the phone with someone.

Alternatives Considered

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

We selected VMware over Azure due to the fact that it was already familiar and still offered the same cloud capabilities that Azure would have gained us. This allowed us to keep using the same interface and not have to relearn everything from start to finish with a new product.

Kernel-based Virtual Machine

It is a very reliable solution that can be used for x86 architecture virtualization with low overhead. It is a free and open source software. Easy to use withOpenStack.

Return on Investment

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

  • Deployment for new employees has decreased from 3 weeks to 4 days

Kernel-based Virtual Machine

  • KVM normally enables customers to fullfill their business goals very fast and it is free, so there is a very small time window from implementation to "investment is returned"
  • If IT staff doesn't have hardcore Linux experience, they will need proper learning time until they'll be able to handle KVM
