Likelihood to Recommend

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

I believe IBM Cloud is well suited for individuals who know their product but not so much for cloud strategy. IBM helps us accelerate and plan the cloud journey and allows us to scale. I wouldn't recommend the IBM Cloud if you know how to scale and distribute the servers world wide.

Scale Computing HC3

If you have more than one physical server in your environment, and you want unmatched redundancy and performance, virtualize with Scale HC3. You'll wonder how you lived without it for so long. Each node is about the same cost as a physical server depending on how you spec it.

Pros

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

  • The performance is top notch. Our on-prem environment was always suffering from lag and general sluggishness. With IBM running everything, it's much smoother.
  • It's always up to date. Our previous environment was always lacking the latest updates and security features. Our audit department enjoys having the peace of mind that everything is up to date.
  • They handle the security of the environment. It allows our security team to focus on higher priority issues. They dont have to worry about making sure our systems are secured.

Scale Computing HC3

  • Simplicity - Scale HC3 takes the guesswork and time investment out of managing a virtualized server environment and you don't need to go to expensive classes to become an expert.
  • Performance has been stellar and reliability is unmatched. Our Scale nodes have been up and online since installation three years ago.
  • The support staff is there to help if you ever need it and they'll look into your system at any time to make sure everything is running as designed.
  • The virtualized environment is robust and scale-able and there's no need to do a server refresh ever again. If a node fails, the VMs migrate over to another node and no one except the IT staff knows about it. You can keep your old nodes in place until the disks fall out of them and you'll be covered.

Cons

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

  • I wish it were a bit easier to manage user access.
  • The initial configuration process could be a bit more streamlined.

Scale Computing HC3

  • It would be nice if we could add a storage only node with very little or no processing power. This would be nice because we wouldn't have to acquire server CALs every time we add storage.

I'm on the fence about renewing the support contract. The reliability of the HC3 makes it difficult to spend the cost of the renewal which is higher than the costs prior to Scale. I'm convinced if we were a larger district that the savings would be tremendous and I wouldn't hesitate to renew. In our specific situation, it may be more feasible to pay per incident.

Usability

Everything is very clearly laid out. Being familiar with vSphere already, it was a quick transition over to the IBM environment. This allowed us to spend less time on the implementation phase and move quickly to actually utilizing the system on a day to day basis. Also, the performance is very good. No lagginess to the website like our previous on-prem environment.

We have had very few instances where we needed to reach out for support, but each time we have the response has been quick. The techs have been knowledgeable and resolved issues in a timely manner

They answer the phone and get to work very quickly. We've not had to use support much at all, but the couple times we had were pleasant and effective.

Purchasing the migration service or tool if one has older systems, a large number of servers, or coming from another VM solution would be a great advantage.

Alternatives Considered

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

We selected VMware over Azure due to the fact that it was already familiar and still offered the same cloud capabilities that Azure would have gained us. This allowed us to keep using the same interface and not have to relearn everything from start to finish with a new product.

HC3 is powerful and user friendly but as an experienced tech I do much some of the power features we have in the VMWare/HyperV world.

HC3 is one of the best products I have purchased for our district. It is unbelievably reliable to the point that they shoot themselves in the foot on support contracts.

Return on Investment

VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud

  • It has a positive impact on the cost required to maintain our vSphere environment by allowing us to get rid of our vsphere hardware and not worry about maintenance either.
  • There have been very few negatives, but one would definitely be the open-ended cost associated with cloud products in general.

Scale Computing HC3

  • We have virtualized ~25 systems at this point and dropped two older SAN arrays from our environment. This has drastically reduced administrative complexity in our environment.
  • Things are just "more stable" - we were often putting out fires with failing hardware across multiple systems. With scale, we have one platform which is highly-redundant and this allows me to finally get some sleep at night. Sleep is priceless.
  • For new projects, we have cut new environment deployment time drastically. Setting up a new hosted environment for a project used to take 2 - 4 weeks, it now takes 2 - 4 days. It also cuts down expense. When we need dedicated environments we now spin-up VM's on a platform that is already budgeted and paid for vs. having to buy new dedicated hardware.
  • An Active-Passive SQL cluster with SAN storage can run anywhere from $20K (assuming you already have the SAN) --> $60k or even $100k if you need to put in the SAN and supporting infrastructure. A SCALE cluster however can support multiple SQL servers and provide almost the same level of redundancy/high-availability with drastically lower cost and complexity vs a traditional cluster.
