AbacusLaw

AbacusLaw allows the whole law firm to be on the same page with access to a community calendar, billing, etc. It is a bit of a bummer that you need to put significant time into training to understand how to use AbacusLaw fully and get the most out of it. I wish there were quicker and easier ways to train and let people know about new additions

Thomson Reuters ProLaw

ProLaw seems to be a good legal management platform for small to mid-size companies. The software could be installed on-premise or cloud version can be also purchased depending upon your needs. The software is best suited for tasks such as client invoicing and billing, Docket and contract management, time tracking, and automate and co-ordinate workflow between lawyers and other staff.

Pros

AbacusLaw

  • Security
  • Organization
  • Easy to use

Thomson Reuters ProLaw

  • ProLaw allows you to bill your time simply and highly effectively which makes the program valuable.
  • The accounting portion of the software is set up to be very simple to use even for those who are not versed in accounting. It is a simple deposit into an account and a check out of the account.
  • The ability to create custom document templates allows you to save countless hours of wasted time cutting and pasting when used in conjunction with stock and custom matter data tabs.
  • When the proper business practices are put in place, the properly organized data contained within a matter can allow even non legal employees the ability to provide first class customer service to clients with questions on their legal matter.

Cons

AbacusLaw

  • Explaining new products or services in a way that is quick and easy to understand

Thomson Reuters ProLaw

  • ProLaw could use expanded mobile features and/or make the Portal part of the program rather than a separate piece to purchase.
  • I'd love to have the old system of annual conferences wherein it was only ProLaw and many, many classes offered each day. Location much more low key and therefore less costly for firms to attend. I enjoyed the longer conference platform.
  • Simplify report writing, not sure how but make it easier.
  • Releases seem to be coming out too often, two a year are a lot, would rather see fixes than new releases.

ProLaw is fully integrated in our firm's organization. It would be impossible to operate without it or similar programming

In terms of usability, the tool is intuitive and easy to use. Initially, it might be a little bit difficult to grab all the functions it can perform, but with the experience, doing the tasks become an easy job and the tool improves your team's productivity and efficiency. It really helps you to deliver excellent service to your clients in less time and at a low cost.

The support is generally good and relatively quick BUT when there is a new product or something they want you to buy, I have felt a bit harassed at that point by sales but when I have an issue I don't feel like support jumps on it as quick.

Thomson Reuters ProLaw provides excellent customer service. We have had a few issues come up that required both immediate and less immediate attention. In both instances Thomson Reuters was very attentive to the issues and provided us solutions to the issues that we encountered. Very highly recommended customer service, I feel that any issue we encountered will be dealt with in a prompt and professional manner.

AbacusLaw

We have just used AbacusLaw but have looked into other similar products such as Clio and have been disappointed in what they offer compared to AbacusLaw.

Thomson Reuters ProLaw

ProLaw is the only solution on the list to truly cover both practice management and document management. It is fully featured in both with only Worldox edging out ProLaw for document management features and functionality. The remainder is a combination of server/client setup and cloud-hosted solutions. ProLaw is a server/client setup and does a good job of covers both management solutions.

Return on Investment

AbacusLaw

  • We have been using Abacus (and previously Amicus) for so long it is hard to tell.

Thomson Reuters ProLaw

  • ProLaw's time-saving features allow you to do more with less people. Human capital is the most expensive cost a business faces so the ability to keep your team organized and busy with less stress allows you a better profit.
  • ProLaw's integrated third party software for merchant processing has allowed me the ability to save countless hours on accounting fees as the entire credit card posting process is automated. This accounts for 70% or more of all of our journal entries!
