ABBYY FineReader
It works exceptionally well for digitizing paper and scanned documents for storage and simple retrieval mainly thanks to OCR technology, which greatly simplifies the process. If there is a need for protection and/or signing scanned documents than ABBYY FineReader has all the necessary features implemented. It may not be the best choice for individuals, where advanced functionalities are not really needed.

Not really. This is a smart product built by a bunch of former Xerox Docushare and Westbrook Fortis developers and sales directors who got tired of doing it wrong at their old employment.

- GlobalSearch is easy to use, but it does take a level of training to be able to create workflows, groups, and set up security. I created a template to stay consistent.
- I know there are some ERP integrations that our Accounting department would like to have more of that aren't built in.
- There may already be a cloud based version of this application, but for now, we have it installed on our server. That causes an extra step for remote users to access the software.
- I don't have many complaints about this software, as it works well for our purposes.

We are definitely renewing our SmartSearch. This is the only place all of our companies contracts and regulatory filings are kept. Our company would lose track of all expiring contracts if we did not renew. We would also need to spend many hours figuring out a new organizational system for all of our files, as well as savings the documents from SmartSearch onto the computer.

With the PDF projected viewer, the document retrieval-to-display can drag for a second more than some systems, and the capture workflow if you overload a server array can also drag, but those are the only two issues we've ever seen with this product, and they are not serious issues at all.

I'd give them a 10, but sometimes the initial contact or call-back is a little slow. They are a rapidly growing company and new client base, so this is to be somewhat expected.

It would have been higher, but the training is a bit muted for the lesser qualified office equipment vendors who signed up as partners to sell and support it. The more experienced ECM vendors and customer end-users will find the training very good, but a bit slow.

Alternatives Considered

Although both have functionalities that they share, in ABBYY FineReader they are better implemented, they have a better performance, in addition to being a more intuitive and simple user that makes their learning curve relatively simple, it is as if the options I need are always available. the hand and not within complicated menus or overloaded interfaces

I did not comparison shop. It was offered by a very trustworthy local business that we were currently doing business with. I was presented with the software, and bought it without hesitation. No regrets.

The scale-ability is quite good actually, but you need competent sales/support folks providing it to you, so the scale is set right for the demands of your system use. Some resellers are not good at doing this, some are fantastic. If you are scaled correctly at first implementation, you'll be very happy with this system.

- We have much more efficient document processes. While putting the software in, we were forced to review how each document flowed through the organization and what the process should be. That helped not only from the perspective of have a tool to automate the monotonous steps, but helped us as an organization more strictly define our processes and standards.
- We are far more prepared for a flood, fire, etc... now that are documents are electronic and backed up off site.
