Abila MIP Fund Accounting

Well-suited for basic accounting, I would give it an 8. Drill-down would be nice on the general ledger to be able to look at the original entry. Maintaining the year codes and distribution codes is much too involved-this needs to be streamlined. Would be nice to be able to update information on encumbrances and purchase orders prior payment. The accounts receivable module is a bit of a nightmare-we don't use the invoicing function as it is too involved for our company. While the Accounting function deserves and 8, I would only give the payroll function about a 4.5-sorry.

If you are handling a large client list, and are selling services, it is dead easy. If you are managing/selling a physical inventory, it seems like it has great options to do that quite well (disclaimer, I do not use those functions, but I have paid attention as that functionality was built into the software). If you want to link your bank account to a bookkeeping platform, this is not the software for you (at least so far).

Pros

Abila MIP Fund Accounting

  • Tracks budget amounts and availability very smoothly and the reports are easy to read and utilize.
  • The encumbrance tracking is excellent and makes staying on budget much easier.
  • The general ledgers are easy to access and read.
  • Information by funding source is easy to track and access.
  • Like the 1099 coding functions.

Priority AccountEdge

  • AccountEdge is great for running reports. It allows you to look up information in numerous ways. I like the fact that the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss reports are interactive so in the screen view mode (as opposed to the printed report) you can easily drill down into accounts and transactions.
  • AccountEdge is also good at creating invoices and statements. Check printing and modifying check layout.
  • The software is quite easy to install and get up and running. The company provides a lot of information on their site, and there is a generous community on their user forum.
  • Reconciliations are fairly easy IF you are not expecting to be able to link your bank accounts to the software. AccountEdge does not do that yet (at least in the US). This is a major flaw in the software--one that I hope is addressed in the very near future.
  • I like that they offer merchant services and point of purchase sales support, but I have no experience in using those capabilities.

Cons

Abila MIP Fund Accounting

  • Payroll module is too complex and requires too much duplication of information input. This is the most confusing system I have ever utilized. It needs to be streamlined and duplications removed. Some information has to be entered in 2-3 locations, much too time consuming and easy to overlook.
  • The payroll tax reporting is very much outdated-have worked with much cheaper software that did a much better job of processing tax returns and W-2/W-3's.
  • While we like the accounting, we would certainly like to switch the payroll system for something better.
  • Drill-down ability on the GL would be nice.

Priority AccountEdge

  • Linking directly to bank accounts. It seems to be the wave of the future, and it is a big glaring omission from the AccountEdge arsenal of tools.
  • AccountEdge allows printing of government tax forms from within the program, but it is at an additional cost and runs on a separate (but somewhat integrated) ap called Formviewer. This is somewhat clunky to use. I have never been able to get it to print US 1099/96 forms correctly. What's up with that?!
  • Similarly, AccountEdge offers direct filing of US government tax documents through a third party. This is also somewhat opaque and clunky. I bought the service this year and thought it was an "all in" purchase, only to find when I went to file W-2's that there was a per employee charge. Maybe I missed the memo as I was trying to sign up for this service, but I felt taken advantage of when I had to pull trig and pay twice.
  • Finally, it is needlessly opaque and complicated to figure out how to purchase and use the printable forms and government eFiling. It almost feels like a scam. I'm hoping that the new owners fix this, pronto. There is no room in today's world of consumer and business software for hidden costs and incomplete or missing information at the point of purchase and installation.

It is a great software to use but it can still improve in some areas. Like if they could add spelling check function. Most software this day has spelling check as a standard function. Maybe if they could also expand the filters available when running custom reports would be very helpful

AccountEdge Pro & Basic is laid out in easy to use centers which compartmentalize a users needs based on departments. Along with that one can set up recurring transactions for things that repeat daily through annually and anything in between. You can set a preference for automatic posting or a user specific reminder to post the action

One of the finer advantages of desktop software, it's always available. AccountEdge doesn't suffer from outages or sluggish internet like web based applications do. It's always there when you power on your device!

Alternatives Considered

Abila MIP Fund Accounting

Fund EZ is a product I found out about from a previous employment stint. It has a lot of the features MIP has but is not nearly as good. I would consider using this product if MIP continues to raise fees.

My hands down preference is to keep my accounting off of the cloud but that is not always the case with my clients. So, to make this comparison somewhat fair I will consider only the items containing parity in cloud vs desktop.AccountEdge vs Xero. AccountEdge has superior interface and key response because an internet connection is generally not as responsive as localized software. Period. I also feel that AccountEdge is far more robust in features as well as how my data is presented (visually). I require uniform naming/wording conventions so I can better assimilate data. While this is possible in Xero, it's not as easy to accomplish because of screen response and keyboard workflow. Mouse oriented vs. keyboard oriented. AccountEdge vs QuickBooks for Mac. Succinctly put: cross-platform. AccountEdge data files do not require "saving as" Windows copies or any other such nonsense conversion. They just work equally well on either platform. So for users whose platforms do not match their accountant's, there is simply no issue. Additionally, Acclivity will give a user's accountant a copy of the software for free.

Not real sure what you mean by scalability. It seems to be able to handle all of the funds we are currently working with. If you mean the looks of it, some things are small and it would be nice to increase the size according to the user.

Return on Investment

Abila MIP Fund Accounting

  • Hard to quantify the return on investment. Purchasing accounting software is a necessary evil and the payback is hard to measure. Basically MIP is another expense we incur each month in order to keep our books. If MIP could add some better features to its system, there could be a better ROI.
  • I think if you have MIP set up properly you could probably eliminate an FTE from your accounting department. I was able to get by with 2 people when most places would of had 3 or 4 with the same amount of work. The key though is knowing how to use the product, and setting it up correctly.

Priority AccountEdge

  • A big plus for me has been the overall organization that AccountEdge has allowed me. Aside from being the obvious, an accounting tool, I have everything I need in one place for customer service in a searchable format. The communication efficiency that results from having all the information available makes follow up with clients and vendors easy and meaningful.
