netFORUm is generally good for small to medium membership organizations but can definitely pose problems in the amount of data and the reporting tools as the membership grows.

A three as in not very likely. I have converted over to Salesforce. You will have to pay for each license and each functionality or module and my experience as a consultant is to help you get things to work well. With Salesforce you may still want an implementation consultant but you get 10 licenses for free annually if you are a 501(c)(3) non profit. Their documentation is easy to use. Additional licenses are more than 70% off and their Dreamforce conference is outstanding. My loyalty has moved to Salesforce Foundation. I implemented the same functionality for less than 1/2 the costs in the same amount or less time

Pros

  • Can store a lot of information. There are many different modules and each module has a lot of spaces for details such as birthday, gender, spouse and children's names, emergency contact information, photos and more.
  • Can be linked to our internal systems. Our awards system is run through our organization's website but the winners are sent to netFORUM so that their records indicate the awards and distinctions they have achieved without us having to manually enter all of these.
  • Can provide a lot of reporting information which is useful for data collection or year-end reporting needs.

  • Help desk. Can't praise that enough. As the main in-house resource for figuring out all things Blackbaud, when something "interesting" occurs their online chat is both responsive, helpful, and delightfully prompt.
  • Reaching out to customers to get their input. Particularly in the past 5 years, Blackbaud has vastly improved their interest in listening to their customers.

Cons

  • The queries and reports are not user-friendly. One really needs to understand the search terminology to run queries and reports.
  • There is no way to prevent duplicates so if someone enters an updated address for a member but creates a new record instead of updating the current record, there are now two records for that person which makes some of the data difficult to sift through.
  • Linking members to their organization is difficult because if someone enters an organization slightly differently from the way it is registered in netFORUM, the person will not be linked to the organization and the reports that say how many members come from a specific institution is now inaccurate.

We've covered a lot, but mostly because we are happy with the system overall. There are a few kinks, and sometimes it takes a minute to figure out the right wording to pull a report or the best way to code a new category that we want to track. But Blackbaud is always there to help us, and once things are figured out - they are super simple to replicate. It wouldn't be worth it to switch to a new system and lose of all our information and time put in to mastering the system

They did not stand behind their product. I had to tell my story/ explain my problem to multiple people, multiple times and in the end the issue that was determined to be a product functionality issue, was never resolved. They company never even apologized for the problem or offered any help in resolving all the issues and lost time it cost us.

netFORUM is better at data collection and support for the price.

I found the Blackbaud database to simply be more comprehensive and easier to manipulate than the others. The user friendliness of the modules and availability of information in the Blackbaud system was just better

Return on Investment

  • Easier to see expiring or expired memberships and initiate the renewal process
  • Streamlining of data increases employee efficiency
  • Difficulty in using it to its full potential means that the total possible ROI may not be achieved

  • I am convinced I was able to better build proposals and gift plans due to the efficiency of that module in the database.
  • The above most likely meant that proposals were better developed and presented than they otherwise would have been, resulting in a better chance of gift closures. I do not have exact data to back this - just my sense.
