Absorb Anywhere LMS

Absorb worked well for us for a number of years but once we started to push the limits of the software, the company and the product let us down. Support became unresponsive and the product enhancements that we were told were coming never did.

Adobe Captivate

Well suited: Gives your presentation a different appearance and allows you to create simulations that lessen your steps when it comes to making training/simulation videos.Less appropriate: Not as user-friendly as I thought. Animations/states are hidden and cause the creator to take extra steps versus using a different type of software program tool.

Pros

  • Clean interface for learners
  • Logical organization of courses
  • Admin portal is OK
Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • The ability to quickly and easily create systems demos with text captions automatically added in.
  • The three-mode approach you can use -- you can record one system simulation and then use it to create a non-interactive demo, a guided user-interactive demo, and/or a non-guided user assessment.
  • The ability to set which area of the screen you want to capture, rather than necessarily being forced to capture your entire screen.
  • The ability to use actions and variables (although, admittedly, I haven't really delved into this in Captivate myself...)
  • The ease of publishing output to an Adobe Connect server.

Cons

  • Customer Support is unresponsive and poor
  • Inconsistent interface in the product
  • Reporting out of Absorb is cumbersome
  • No search functionality within courses.

  • It drives me crazy that the caption text doesn't automatically put a period at the end...I always have to end up going into each and every one to add that darned period!
  • The caption boxes aren't as slick looking as they should be nowadays, and the ability to customize them isn't quite as robust as I'd like.
  • Getting live tech support is exceedingly expensive and Adobe has the worst, most frustrating website (which is ironic, considering the products that they sell). Adobe has many very good products, but they're not a company I enjoy doing business with.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

Alternatives Considered

At the time of selection, we went with Absorb as they were one of the few that could handle online transactions for courses. We are in the process of migrating to Skilljar and will be discontinuing our subscription to Absorb in 2018.

Adobe is a leader in the CBT training field; it's not as easy to get started as some competitors, but it does have a full feature set.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to lighten the work load on our finance team by moving course purchase processing to the online platform.
  • Learning team was able to reduce the amount of live training and travel.
Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • Positive by allowing cross functional learning.
  • Certain processes are faster because there are easy/short learning videos for all to watch.
