Absorb Anywhere LMS

Absorb worked well for us for a number of years but once we started to push the limits of the software, the company and the product let us down. Support became unresponsive and the product enhancements that we were told were coming never did.

Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate really excels at providing tools to create interactive, electronic learning sessions. We were able to create electronic training modules on how to use a Joomla based CMS system as well as with procedures for handling data forms. It was also helpful for creating short videos with screenshots for help guides. Perhaps the one area where the program might not excel as well would be with paper based instructions or training documents. Adobe Indesign or other programs are much more feature rich for documentation creation.

  • Clean interface for learners
  • Logical organization of courses
  • Admin portal is OK

  • Adobe Captivate records screen shots click-by-click. This allows us to control exactly what steps the users see.
  • Adobe Captivate allows voice-over dubbing. This feature lets us narrate the steps people need to take to learn the products we are covering.
  • Adobe Captivate allows closed captioning. This lets us add voice-over narration, but also allows users to turn off the sound and read the instructions. Many users participate in training from a cubicle where sound travels too broadly to listen to the voice narration.

Cons

  • Customer Support is unresponsive and poor
  • Inconsistent interface in the product
  • Reporting out of Absorb is cumbersome
  • No search functionality within courses.

  • Adobe Captivate has some limitations in how dialog boxes and text frames work. This restricts the creativity of my team.
  • It would be nice to have an automatic voice to text feature to turn the narration into closed captioning.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

At the time of selection, we went with Absorb as they were one of the few that could handle online transactions for courses. We are in the process of migrating to Skilljar and will be discontinuing our subscription to Absorb in 2018.
