Absorb worked well for us for a number of years but once we started to push the limits of the software, the company and the product let us down. Support became unresponsive and the product enhancements that we were told were coming never did.

Articulate Storyline

Articulate Storyline is very well suited for customer service type training or other sort of flashy demonstrations as it offers a lot of human character options and interactivity features. We use Storyline for our more technical training, however we only utilize about 20% of the program's features because the characters or animations are quite out of place in our modules. We need a much more academic look and feel in our material.

Pros

  • Clean interface for learners
  • Logical organization of courses
  • Admin portal is OK
Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • Articulate Storyline is especially adept at providing interactive training modules with the ability to add in various learning paths with animations and button selection. When done correctly it can be highly engaging for the user.
  • It is very easy to add voice over, screen shot, and screen capture video to your modules with the recording software built right into the program. This instantly eliminated our need for external software to fill these roles and was a huge time saver.
  • As we use multiple methods for module delivery, Articulate's publishing options are first rate. You can burn to a CD, publish as a SCORM package for a LMS, publish to a website, or even as a Word doc if you need to pass around just the content for review. This versatility serves all our needs.

Cons

  • Customer Support is unresponsive and poor
  • Inconsistent interface in the product
  • Reporting out of Absorb is cumbersome
  • No search functionality within courses.

  • Responsive- this is a matter of perspective. On one hand, responsive sites are becoming the norm, and sites are arranging themselves to better fit on a device's available space and orientation. On the other, if a designer creates a software simulation or a presentation design ("slide") for a specific presentation, rearranging those assets is not following the designer's intent (this is why Articulate scales, but doesn't have true responsiveness). I see both sides, but may want to see some options to set breakpoints to arrange items for different sizes or orientations in future versions.
  • Articulate is an early adopter of xAPI, and pretty standard features are reporting in xAPI streams, but seeing expansion of xAPI options in triggers would be an amazing feature set to expand
  • Wish I had more to say, but those are the only things I could think of after building over 100 courses in the tool.

We can easily convert our older content into Storyline 2 courses, which makes updates a breeze. We've been well-pleased with the software, Articulate's dedication to releasing bug fixes and new features, and the fact that it is well-received by our associates and stakeholders.

It does what we need it to. We create computer based learning and occasionally have someone use the tool via a tablet. It works great for that! If you were going to use it on a smartphone, I am not sure it would be the best choice. Since most formal eLearning courses are better suited to a larger screen then I would rate it highly every time.

The Articulate user community (including staff and users) is amazing. There are so many people willing to help each other and offer advice. You can tell people are passionate about this software and supporting new users who are struggling. When you're a new user, it really helps to know you're not alone if you get stuck.

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Alternatives Considered

At the time of selection, we went with Absorb as they were one of the few that could handle online transactions for courses. We are in the process of migrating to Skilljar and will be discontinuing our subscription to Absorb in 2018.

Atriculate Storyline is much more user friendly compared to Captivate. It is simlar in some ways but personally I found Captivate more clunky and less forgiving. There is also more of a community, from what I have found so far for Articulate. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough but since finding and using Articulate I haven't looked back. By no means do I pretend to be an expert but from my experience it feels like you have to be an expert in PowerPoint to really get the full benefit of Captivate, whereas Articulate Storlyline does not require this. You can find your way round things and call on others for support due to the community available.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to lighten the work load on our finance team by moving course purchase processing to the online platform.
  • Learning team was able to reduce the amount of live training and travel.
Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • Quick way to impart knowledge, best practise and updates to a wider audience.
  • Able to test learners understanding of the information given by interaction tests of learning that capture attention
  • Cost savings. This has been a huge positve for us as a business due to the number of learners we have. Being able to reach them remotely has revolutionized the way we engage with learners.
  • eLearning can never fully replace the impact of face to face training. This is sometimes a message lost with management as they tend to see the cost savings the good eLearning brings rather than what learners may be missing out on.
