Absorb Anywhere LMS

Absorb worked well for us for a number of years but once we started to push the limits of the software, the company and the product let us down. Support became unresponsive and the product enhancements that we were told were coming never did.

From my experience, D2L is useful for most college courses, from those that are lecture-based to small, collaborative classes. There are individual features that require workarounds here and there, but with a couple of semesters' experience, it is entirely functional. I suppose there are people who find using any LMS challenging, and that would then include D2L, but otherwise, I can't say that D2L would not be appropriate for any institution of higher learning.

Pros

  • Clean interface for learners
  • Logical organization of courses
  • Admin portal is OK

  • As a proficient user of competitive learning management systems, there was a slight learning curve when moving into Desire2Learn; however, after a few weeks I found this integrated learning platform to be user friendly to both me as the online course facilitator and my students. There are numerous online resources that assist in the learning curve.
  • Modules within Desire2Learn create an organized online course room that enhance delivery of course materials.
  • Revisions are "hassle free" and reorganizing course resources encourage frequent updates that enhance the online course and keep the material current.
  • Students interact easily with online instructor and peers.

Cons

  • Customer Support is unresponsive and poor
  • Inconsistent interface in the product
  • Reporting out of Absorb is cumbersome
  • No search functionality within courses.
Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • The interface for creators of content can be clunky--lots of clicks, lots of steps to remember
  • The discussions and dropbox files do not work well with rubrics--very awkward
  • The system's updates, while helpful, seem to come both too often and without enough of the changes needed

While this product is not perfect, it is the most effective and efficient of all of the LMS products I have used. It is intuitive in a way that most programs are not - which is why it is easier to train people in its use. I like the freedom and flexibility in design, and appreciate the freedom in creating roles and permissions that it allows for.

After a short learning curve, the functions in Desire2Learn made sense. Usability is consistent throughout this integrated learning platform. After the first week of class students appear confident with the resources; consistency achieves this goal. For some, who are familiar with the competition, Desire2Learn may be a bit cumbersome; however, a little patience goes a long way when working with instructional design, course delivery, and students.

Both students and instructor enjoy the 24-hoiur access. After, all isn't that the point of online learning. As an instructor located in an Eastern time zone state it is great to connect with students located in a Pacific time zone state. I have gotten comments about the early hours I am in the course room grading assignments . . . 4:00 a.m. PST; 7:00 a.m. EST So, it's sleep time for my students and "first cup of coffee" time for me.

Easy to navigate; little to no delay from one section of the course room to another; actually fun to use after overcoming the learning curve.

This rating was given to the support team at the college for providing training and immediate response to questions related to Desire2Learn. This high caliber support is provided to both faculty and students. Also available are training videos and e-mail reminders when there are updates within the integrated learning platform.

Online training from the college was excellent. Peers worked in a D2L course room as students. It's always fabulous to be on the "other side" of the classroom and view the online course room from another perspective.

The D2L implementation team listened to our concerns and built a system based upon our needs. We wanted to keep them after the initial implementation.

Alternatives Considered

At the time of selection, we went with Absorb as they were one of the few that could handle online transactions for courses. We are in the process of migrating to Skilljar and will be discontinuing our subscription to Absorb in 2018.

Desire2Learn is at the top of the list in terms of a robust, fully functional Learning Management System. I think the others do have many similar features but D2L's customer service puts them at the head of the class. Blackboard has horrible customer service from my experience and are a very high pressure seller.

During my first semester working with Desire2Learn the integrated learning management system was more down than up. This meant reconfiguring assignment due dates, frustration for both the instructor, students, and help desk staff. After an upgrade, Desire2Learn has been reliable.

Ron Massicotte profile photo
  • Software is costly
  • Users like the delivery platform and find it easy to use.
