AcademicWorks

This is an excellent system for any college/university or scholarship provider that offers a large volume of scholarships to a high number of applicants. The price point might be a little high for a smaller school/provider and may not be worthwhile if their numbers are lower.

Classy

If Classy is within your budget, I'd go for it. If you're looking for a platform that will not only allow you to process donations on your website, but do so much more (i.e. crowdfunding, peer-to-peer, campaign tracking, automation, customization, sync to Salesforce, etc.) and have someone hold your hand as you work through the set up process and beyond, then Classy is for you.

Pros

  • Reporting - pulling reports in AcademicWorks is so simple and quick. Whether I am putting together a report of applicants for a donor, or the pulling the applicants from a specific school or major, I can do it by the click of a button.
  • Support - if I ever have questions or need help problem solving, the support desk is readily available.
  • Flexibility - we can customize pretty much every aspect of how the user experiences AcademicWorks

  • The back end makes it easy to create sleek, professional-looking pages that encourage donors to get involved.
  • Event management is a breeze, and we can easily send messages to event attendees with details, as well as follow up messages.
  • It is easy to track campaign performance and produce detailed reports.

Cons

  • Ability to personalize applications - we serve many companies, and we get requests all the time to use their logo, but we can't do that in AcademicWorks.
  • Selective reviews - some review committees don't want to review specific parts of applications, but we can't pick and choose which questions are reviewable for specific opportunities.

  • It seems like updates seek to "fix" issues that were never broken for us, and we now have sync issues that were previously not an issue due to the latest update.
  • The recurring donor tool does not allow us to change the recurring donation amount, so we need to cancel and recreate donations when a donor wants to increase their gift.
  • Since the last update, we have seen a sharp uptick in donors complaining of freezing donation screens that go nowhere. In these cases, donors are frustrated that they have lost all the information they entered into the donation page.

Alternatives Considered

At the time that we made the switch, NextGen was not able to offer the option that committee reviewers could rank a student and that their ranking could carry over into multiple scholarships. We already had over 70 committee reviewers and the process to review some of the more general scholarship applicants was taking more than 10 hours. The AcademicWorks System allows each applicant to be ranked by a number of committee reviewers (you set the number of reviewers) one time and the score can be propagated across multiple scholarships. This is an efficient use of the reviewers time and keeps the time commitment manageable.
