Accelo

Accelo is a system that can do it all. It's extremely sophisticated. Depending on the sophistication of your organization, or specifically the abilities of the people you put in charge of the implementation, it can almost be too sophisticated. It all just depends on your situation. The more you use it, the more data you give it, the more you'll be able to see and do. It's incredibly powerful. But it's definitely not a tool that would be appropriate for smaller boutique type organizations that have only basic needs.

Planview Enterprise One

Probably the best tool for both PPM and APM capabilities on the market today. Well suited for companies who are ready and able to commit. This means total buy-in from the entire organization. Companies must also be strategically minded and flexible with process / organizational change management. Not well suited for organizations who are inflexible or who only think tactically. These organizations might perform very well from an operational vantage, but will struggle with Enterprise One.

Pros

Accelo

  • Timing Client Work: You are able to better manage your time on your clients.
  • Housing Client Info in one Area: You can view all you need for any given client in one area.

Planview Enterprise One

  • Out of the box analytics. Canned, but modestly configurable reports that provide quick insights to project and resource performance.
  • Flexible configuration enables resource management at a macro or micro level.
  • Modeling (what-if). I can create projects, load with resources and quickly stack it against our existing portfolios to identify conflicts and optimize scheduling.

Cons

Accelo

  • Accelo is excellent on the adaptation to its deep functionalities.
  • Managing multiple project is very challenging.
  • Not easy to collect multiple reports across platforms.

Planview Enterprise One

  • Change, Risk and Issue tracking is available in the tool currently, but it could use a face-lift to be up to par with the rest of the application. Portal visibility into this area of data could be helpful, especially when tracking for a Program of projects.
  • Communication capabilities to the users currently comes in the form of onscreen notifications delivered via portlet views and/or in the form of an email notification delivered to the user's email address on file. However, these notifications are not as configurable as we would like to see. The text of the emails cannot be edited. Many notifications cannot be configured to be sent via email and must be viewed on screen by the user. However, when an implementation is less mature, or you have users that are not required to be in the tool daily, these notifications go unnoticed and are therefore ineffective.
  • Recently Planview has begun to deliver Web Services to their customers to use to build interfaces and other automations. For an organization with the right talent available, these services can be very useful. The challenge is that some of them are lacking in providing all of the same capabilities that a live user would have available in the User Interface, therefore only so much can be converted to Web Services. We hope that Planview continues to invest in expanding and improving these services to meet the needs of their customers.

We have been a Planview customer since 1999 and have seen it grow and mature as a tool. We have looked at other tools and have found that PV continues to meet our needs and is easy for our resources to use. They work to stay up on the project management industry and the direction it is going, keep on on current technology so that we can work more effectively, provide excellent customer support and have great pricing for what they offer. We can purchase only the modules we need versus buying a tool where we would only use a portion of the functionality.

I feel it is very difficult to use, and very limiting and of over complicated in it's basic project management basic functions. In my opinion it is over engineered to the point of un-useful

We are long time Planview users and its availability is only limited to our internal SLAs for nightly backups. I have never experienced any unexpected or prolonged software downtime from Planview itself.

From the beginning the Accelo team has been very invested in ensuring our success and overall happiness with the platform. The initial implementation specialists and trainers did a fairly good job of learning our company and needs, and tried to tailor the trainings accordingly. However, once we made the formal switch to the platform, meaning we no longer were using our legacy systems, we found that we had a lot of questions....and a lot of ideas and recommendations. The support team is extremely responsive and seemingly happy to receive our continual feedback. And if we encounter an issue that seems to be a system issue, they work diligently to fix it (we've actually had an engineer join a call with us to learn of the issue - and subsequently fix it)

Any issue is addressed correctly within the right amount of time. Sometimes it takes a while to be aligned on the request and to have a solution, but it doesn't happen frequently. There is a ticketing system where I can track all my requests that could be improved a little bit.

Always have a pre-implementation meeting or conference call with Planview to ensure all are on the same page, disclosure of all and any customization (including reports) and plan for support after implementation of a specified amount of time with the assigned implementation resource. And document everything

Alternatives Considered

Accelo

Accelo doesn't really exceed any competitors in any one area of their product, but in 2015 when we made the move this was the best option that included all the tools we wanted. However, user adoption was low in some areas due to the UI, so we scaled back Accelo and added other tools.
Ryan Freeman | TrustRadius Reviewer

Planview Enterprise One

We made the tool selection back in 2002. Most competitors are now gone or purchased by someone else. At that time they were one of the few companies who had a somewhat mature and configurable budget module. We were also coming out of an Access environment, so we were comfortable with the "Excel spreadsheet" look of the tool.

Return on Investment

Accelo

  • It substantially reduced the number of systems we use to run our business.
  • It reduced the need to train our staff on a variety of platforms.
  • It gave us the ability to have a client-facing portal that directly integrates with our backend systems.
Chris Osterhout | TrustRadius Reviewer

Planview Enterprise One

  • I can't quote specific numbers, but, before our current installation of Planview, data would exist in multiple sources and was duplicated across the organization. It took practically a full FTE to produce monthly reports on cost and effort across the portfolio of work. Plus, with duplicate sources of "truth", much time was spent reconciling the data across the multiple sources and debating which was correct. Now, the data comes directly from a single source and anyone in the company can view it real time.
  • The cost is not insignificant. If all a company needs is something to run project plans for a handful of projects, Planview is not for you. Planview is better suited for companies with multi-million dollar portfolios of work involving dozens or hundreds of resources. By getting that consolidated view into resource needs of the future, companies are able to make better strategic decisions around which projects to accept and which ones to defer or cancel.
