Financial Edge NXT is a cloud accounting solution tailored for nonprofits that provides a general ledger, projects, grants, endowments, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, banking, and more. It offers real-time reporting, with one-click drill-down functionality and export capability.
The software is great and does what we need for our day-to-day accounting, but when it comes to our in-house IT, we seem to have issues with our internal server complementing our ability to work outside of the office on the software. Data has been lost, work time wasted twice.
It has good and simple navigation, and once set up, works in all areas pretty well. I love the expense management module, as we have 25 credit card users. It assures us that the charges are correct as they are fed directly from our bank. Once created, my customized reports provide me with all the financial information I need. As a church, we use net asset accounting, which Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT handles well. My biggest negative is how the implementation is done. When setting it up, you have to make important decisions about how your system is set up before you have enough information to understand what these decisions mean. Although they provide you with a "sandbox" version, you need at least 6 months using real data in order to be informed about crucial decisions.
I love how well FE interacts with Raiser's Edge. This makes it much easier for our organization to stay current and increases our level of trust in the information we are seeing in both systems.
The reporting features in FE make it easy to pull accurate information in a timely manner.
I was hoping we would be able to create Queries as we have that functionality in Database View.
The online bank feed and reconciliation process done in the Treasury module can be very buggy where I'm not able to see all the transactions in a given range.
We use Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT for the general ledger and accounts payable functions, and we also use Blackbaud Education Management for student billing. However, these two systems are not connected, and the information for student accounts must be transferred into FENXT manually.
I feel that the system in Database View is more user-friendly than the online Web View.
In hindsight, I wish we had spent more time discussing our chart of accounts when we first implemented the system. Due to the complex nature, we had to go through a re-implementation of the system because it wasn't done the first time accurately.
Blackbaud has partnered with Smart Tuition, and the 2 systems conveniently connect, so the data is transferred with the push of a button. I am a fan of Blackbaud, but I am NOT a fan of Smart Tuition. I prefer to use a different tuition management system with Blackbaud.
Inertia is a great factor - we have used Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT since 2003, so we are unlikely to change unless there is a very good reason to do so.
IT DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAVE HAD ACCOUNTANTS AND DATA ENTRY USER INPUT - VERY CLUMSY AND FRUSTRATING. IN A CLASS I WAS TOLD TO IMPORT JV'S FROM AN EXCEL FILE... I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT. IF YOU LOOK AT THE DATABASE JV FOR EXAMPLE, YOU CAN DATA ENTER QUICKLY.... NOT SO WITH FENXT.
Excellent support given by people who fully understand the system and your question. Multiple channels to access support, and an easy-to-use tracking system for support requests. No language barriers, and people unafraid to admit they don't know the answer. If followup is needed, they get back to me when they say they will, and they keep after a problem until it's resolved. I LOVE BLACKBAUD's SUPPORT!
Because we work with a CPA as our Finance Manager, it is best to have the ability to track our workflow and progress, as well as our own Due Date Tracking in order to remind him. They use QuickBooks to document their business, but using Access allows us to easily manage our number to send to them for general use.
NXT is created for the specific unique needs of the nonprofit industry. Quickbooks is usable but doesn't have the functionality and reliability of NXT. It has been many years since I used Quickbooks, so maybe it has improved, but I don't know of another accounting program that is created especially for the nonprofit industry.
