SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM)

SolarWinds Access Rights Manager is ideal for companies using Active Directory. It allows you to manage all employees' permissions from one location. Besides that, it is also great for cybersecurity experts to visualize all the permissions within the company, to audit them and make sure no one has too many permissions. Considering the scope of the applications, it would be most-suited for medium to large companies.

Other solutions support symmetric encryption only, where Yubico supports both symmetric and asymmetric encryption methods. It can be installed on cloud as well as on-premises. So if there is a customer who is not cloud friendly, they can also [benefit from] Yubico. It's suited to all kinds of organization [as it] has so many authentication methods available i.e. Time Based OTP (TOTP), Counter Based OTP (HOTP), Smart Card, etc... It supports older authentication methods as well and supports all the platforms/operating systems.

Cons

SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM)

  • Data owner management (reports from data owner changes).
  • Exchange access reports
  • Recertification overview for admins (which was not recertified until now).
  • More webinars needed to get all the function and to get more out of the product.

Yubico

  • The management application is confusing. It's very easy to invalidate your key/reset it by mistake.
  • Not a consistent experience across applications. This isn't necessarily YubiKey's fault, but it's enough to be an annoying quirk.

Alternatives Considered

SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM)

We looked at Okta, Sailpoint, and some others but they were cost prohibitive and we needed to slap something together quickly and these required a lot of planning before implementation. Planning is a good thing and would certainly have helped but I wasn't given the option of moving the launch date. Given those constraints, this was really the only option.

Hardware-based authentication is much better than software-based because it cannot be forged. Also, users lose their software authenticators when they move to a new phone. Yubikey always works, does not need a battery, and is built around safety. The protocol is well defined and supports multiple standards.

Return on Investment

SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM)

  • Service desk spends a lot less time digging through events now
  • Due to the automation sets built in, staff spends less time administering basics changes

  • Cost for implementation can be a bit high (per-key runs around forty dollars).
  • Keeping information and access secure is priceless and should be a part of any business.
  • Sleek/small/unobtrusive, which makes it stand out among other USB security options.
