Likelihood to Recommend

Freedom CMS

The only thing I believe Accrisoft Freedom is not as well suited is for large e-commerce sites. Accrisoft Freedom actually has an E-commerce module and can do products and online sales, however if this is the majority of what your business does (or your clients' businesses), I would recommend an E-commerce focused CMS.
For almost all other circumstances I can think of though, I would recommend Accrisoft Freedom - ma and pa shops on up to a corporation.

Key Questions:1. How many CMS Authors will need to have access?2. What is your planned server infrastructure (IE: DEV-->STG-->PROD)?3. Will you be deploying to the Cloud (if so, Amazon or Azure)?4. What are the business challenges you are trying to overcome?5. What development technologies are you in-house development staff familiar with (IE: .NET, MVC, PHP, Drupal, etc)?6. Do you need to integrate with other systems like SalesForce, HubSpot, SharePoint, etc?7. What is your overall budget for (1) software and (2) services?

Pros

Freedom CMS

  • Hosting and maintenance is taken care of. Due to it being proprietary software, everything is built to work together.
  • Simple to use. Basic functionality for websites is built in without having to dig through thousands of potential options.
  • Development is straightforward...no backend languages required. So if someone wants a unique layout for a portfolio, it's very simple to add a new content type and build the new layout using basic html and css.

  • Content Publishing. Control is intuitive and very distinct from a workflow perspective. Advanced features such as tagging & taxonomy may be introduced for more personalization
  • Mobile. support for responsive design / adaptive sites is imperative and Ektron provides device based support to control the mobile experience relative to content, images, navigation, etc...
  • eSync. the ability to replicate from multiple environments at both an app level and content as well as in a bi-directional manner is very powerful and a differentiator for the WCM to competitive platforms

Cons

Freedom CMS

  • Creating layouts could be simpler. For example, if you have a sidebar on different interior pages, it isn't very intuitive to have something different on each one. Having the ability to control what is in different regions of pages would be beneficial.
  • The Commerce modules aren't quite there yet. We have had issues with reliability and if it's not built in by default, you can't use it.
  • Documentation could be better organized. There has been a lot of mixed articles from past features that no longer exist, and for some things there just isn't any documentation at all. I have had to create complex layouts that had I known a shortcode existed, it would have made my life much easier.

  • Need to expand on external system integration to where they are more automated. This ranges from the marketing Automation platforms to analytical / social platforms.
  • Document Repository could be improved to be a complete Digital Asset Management tool that includes in depth usage data/analytics.

We are currently very entrenched in the Ektron system and would require an entire site overhaul if we switched

As both a manager of CMS content as well as a designer, I find the CMS to be intuitive and easy to understand. (They also have great documentation and customer support if you need it.)

Between the platform's functionality and Ektron's technical support, I use the CMS with confidence on a daily basis.

Unplanned outages or errors are fairly rare in our instance. And when there are issues, they're usually fixed fairly quickly

Support

Freedom CMS 8.2

This rating is based on personal experience only. I believe majority of people would say their support is top notch & 10/10. The only reason I am personally am giving it lower is because I consider my self a much more advanced user of Freedom than their typical Solution Provider developers. Because I am advanced, I troubleshoot my own issues pretty in-depth before I even contact Accrisoft support. Therefore sometimes I feel it takes longer to get the researched & specific answer I need vs. a simple support question would.

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Alternatives Considered

Freedom CMS

In all honesty, we have been moving away from Accrisoft Freedom due to its lack of customizability. We as an agency generally prefer open source solutions since our client base primarily consists of those looking for a more custom solution that can be built off of in the future. While yes, these tend to need more care and attention, they have benefited us more.

The ability to create .Net widgets is powerful feature that allows easy customization. Other CMS's offer a lot more plugins from 3rd party vendors, but if you need to do a lot of customizations yourself and you are a .Net shop, then I would recommend Ektron.

Return on Investment

Freedom CMS

  • Without knowing the limits of the software, projects tended to go out of scope easily, especially since the client would expect functionality that simply wasn't available.
  • The custom modules made it very simple to create something reusable. So, when we found a feature that clients liked, we could replicate it very easily.
  • Backups and migration are very simple within the Accrisoft platform. Sites could be moved from one location to another in under a minute.

Ektron (Discontinued)

  • While I can not speak to numbers I can say that Ektron is a well known, well designed CMS and our clients like using it.
  • The Ektron name has opened opportunities for lead conversions because it is so well respected in the industry.
  • Ektron's developer portal was recently revamped and has a wealth of knowledge.
  • Working with Ektron to open tickets is pretty simple.
