Freedom CMS

The only thing I believe Accrisoft Freedom is not as well suited is for large e-commerce sites. Accrisoft Freedom actually has an E-commerce module and can do products and online sales, however if this is the majority of what your business does (or your clients' businesses), I would recommend an E-commerce focused CMS.
For almost all other circumstances I can think of though, I would recommend Accrisoft Freedom - ma and pa shops on up to a corporation.

eZ Platform

For a new site:1. Are there any hosting requirements? eZ Publish works best on a traditional LAMP stack.2. What is the expertise of the development and systems administrations individuals? There should be some PHP development experience and a solid level of Apache and MySQL hosting.3. Who will be managing the content of the site? What is their bandwidth for training? For ongoing content changes?

Pros

  • Hosting and maintenance is taken care of. Due to it being proprietary software, everything is built to work together.
  • Simple to use. Basic functionality for websites is built in without having to dig through thousands of potential options.
  • Development is straightforward...no backend languages required. So if someone wants a unique layout for a portfolio, it's very simple to add a new content type and build the new layout using basic html and css.

  • Content Taxonomy: Content is managed in a tree. Though taxonomy vs folksonomy is a near-religious debate among professionals, clients seeing the system for the first time just seem to "get it" more often.
  • Content Flexibility: Common content types such as blog posts and articles are available out of the box. However, customizing these and creating new content types is very easy.
  • Developer Friendly: Developers need only a little PHP experience to get started. Of course being an expert doesn't hurt and opens the door for the development of custom modules.

Cons

  • Their preview setup for reviewing page changes prior to pushing them live is not good. You basically have to push things live to see how they will look, then go back and tweak it, while the changes in progress are live on the site. They need a sandbox, or a better preview feature within the backend so you dont have to keep pushing changes live to test out functionality.
  • Integration with outside tools is non existent. Instead of trying to force people to use their modules or features it would make much more sense to more easily integrate with leading tools in niche spaces.
  • The UI is pretty old. It could use a big refresh. Things like drag and drop builders and functionality should be standard these days. This is also a plus for non tech savvy users as it keeps their page structures to what works without letting people tinker. But if you want to tinker and be a higher end user Freedom isn't the best bet.

  • The template language: Outputting content or doing something special with it requires use of the templating language. Myself along with other developers I have trained, found this to be one of the biggest hurdles.
  • Layout of physical files: The system decides what settings files and templates to use based on a hierarchy of modules. The same file can exist in multiple modules and you can find yourself deep within very similar looking folder structures, causing confusion during debugging.
  • Community: eZ has a solid set of community contributors but the gap between it and Drupal or Wordpress is pretty large.

Support

Freedom CMS8.2
Based on 1 answer
This rating is based on personal experience only. I believe majority of people would say their support is top notch & 10/10. The only reason I am personally am giving it lower is because I consider my self a much more advanced user of Freedom than their typical Solution Provider developers. Because I am advanced, I troubleshoot my own issues pretty in-depth before I even contact Accrisoft support. Therefore sometimes I feel it takes longer to get the researched & specific answer I need vs. a simple support question would.

Alternatives Considered

Prior to Freedom I had only used CMSs that were specific to car dealer websites. Compared to those, Freedom is leaps and bounds ahead in every category. Compared to WordPress I would choose Freedom due to the fact that you know your site isn't going to get broken by something you tweak. You also can be sure it won't be as open to hacks/attacks as an open source tool, along with less management to keep those things at bay with an open source solution. We mainly selected Freedom due to the fact it was used by the company we had build our site, we chose that company more than we chose Freedom, but it had the basic functionality that allowed us to sign off on going with them during the evaluation period.

eZ Publish isn't as large in community size and number of installations as other content management systems. However, it's just as capable and met our needs:
  • Developers, system administrators, and project manager can all speak the same language during the development and maintenance cycles of a site.
  • End-user training is very straight-forward.
  • Vendor support is available.
  • Client IT departments can access if need (developers/designers/sysadmins).
  • The community is there (forums) and there are solid contributions (extensions) from both the vendor and the community.

Return on Investment

  • This was the first CMS we had at our company so hard to say positive or negative impact.
  • Prior to this CMS there was a static site that html files had to be ftp to a company to have the site updated. So from that standpoint it made updating the site much less expensive.
  • Compared to a tool like Wordpress this is much more secure and easier to manage, but since we outsource that portion of it to the company that built the site we dont realize those gains.

  • Common knowledge: By making eZ a core offering, developers, system administrators, and project managers were able to communicate with each other effectively.
  • Training: Due to its content taxonomy, end-user training often went well.
  • Support: In our case, we had Gold support from eZ Publish which saved time and helped with customizations.
