Freedom CMS

The only thing I believe Accrisoft Freedom is not as well suited is for large e-commerce sites. Accrisoft Freedom actually has an E-commerce module and can do products and online sales, however if this is the majority of what your business does (or your clients' businesses), I would recommend an E-commerce focused CMS.
For almost all other circumstances I can think of though, I would recommend Accrisoft Freedom - ma and pa shops on up to a corporation.

Liferay Digital Experience Platform (DXP)

Liferay Portal is a framework which comes with a fine grained security/permission model, (Web) Content Management, Authentication and Authorization, outbox portlets with different features to manage content or users. So if any business application has below questions then I can recommend not to use Liferay as a platform.
  • Application is big but not content or user driven.
  • Application with few static contents.
  • Application with batch transactions(DB) i.e. insert , update db records in batch.
  • Application with ERP capabilities.
  • Application with Big Data support.

Pros

  • Hosting and maintenance is taken care of. Due to it being proprietary software, everything is built to work together.
  • Simple to use. Basic functionality for websites is built in without having to dig through thousands of potential options.
  • Development is straightforward...no backend languages required. So if someone wants a unique layout for a portfolio, it's very simple to add a new content type and build the new layout using basic html and css.

  • OpenSource: Liferay is open source portal framework so developers can easily extend or customize it for their organization or department based on their requirement.
  • OutOfBox: Liferay Portal is not only a portal platform. It also provides a 60+ applications and tools included in the form of portlets. These portlets are available out of the box or in the form of plugins.
  • MarketPlace: Liferay has it own market place (i.e app store) where developer or contributors are contributing their ideas (application) so community can use it freely (some are paid).
  • Enterprise-Ready Portal Solution: It is fully ready to support mission-critical, enterprise applications in an environment configured for multiple redundancies and 24/7 up-times.
  • High Availability and High Performance: Liferay Portal has been tested to support more than 3,000 concurrent transactions (33,000 simultaneous users) on a single 8-core application server, with mean login times under one second and maximum ½ throughput of 79+ logins per second. Liferay Portal has proven to handle millions of page views and over 1.3 million users.
  • Liferay Portal is also deployable to the Cloud and virtual server environments and ensures high availability and performance with: Hardware/Software Load Balancing, HTTP Failover, Session Replication
  • Distributed Cache using Lightweight Multicast Protocol
  • Terracotta, Oracle RAC, and other scalability solutions

Cons

  • Their preview setup for reviewing page changes prior to pushing them live is not good. You basically have to push things live to see how they will look, then go back and tweak it, while the changes in progress are live on the site. They need a sandbox, or a better preview feature within the backend so you dont have to keep pushing changes live to test out functionality.
  • Integration with outside tools is non existent. Instead of trying to force people to use their modules or features it would make much more sense to more easily integrate with leading tools in niche spaces.
  • The UI is pretty old. It could use a big refresh. Things like drag and drop builders and functionality should be standard these days. This is also a plus for non tech savvy users as it keeps their page structures to what works without letting people tinker. But if you want to tinker and be a higher end user Freedom isn't the best bet.

  • Portal Security: It has good security model but in few areas it requires improvement.
  • Encrypt LDAP passwords on import
  • Log in should be via SSL by default
  • Upgrade/patch process should include an alert in the control panel
  • Add virus scan for uploaded files
  • Server Administration
  • Garbage Collector should be able to be scheduled to run from the control panel
  • Reindexing should be able to be scheduled from the control panel
  • Provide GUI to change the default Liferay favorite icon to any desired logo
  • LDAP mapping GUI to custom Liferay attributes
  • Configurations: Less configurations from properties files and provide more GUI to update from control panel.

Support

Freedom CMS8.2
Based on 1 answer
This rating is based on personal experience only. I believe majority of people would say their support is top notch & 10/10. The only reason I am personally am giving it lower is because I consider my self a much more advanced user of Freedom than their typical Solution Provider developers. Because I am advanced, I troubleshoot my own issues pretty in-depth before I even contact Accrisoft support. Therefore sometimes I feel it takes longer to get the researched & specific answer I need vs. a simple support question would.

Alternatives Considered

Compared to every similar products/CMSs I have used, nothing competes with Freedom CMS. It's far more intuitive, far easier to use as a developer (and as the client), easier to customize and better to maintain and assist our clients. Hands down the best CMS solution I've found for me, my work and our clients. The only 2 in this list I might recommend over Freedom would only be circumstantial: if you are an medium to large e-commerce business (or your client is). ShopSite & Shopify (or Magento, etc) would probably be a better option. Freedom does have some e-commerce included, but I would recommend Freedom for small e-commerce businesses, or businesses where e-commerce is not their main focus, but they'd like to include some on the site.

Return on Investment

  • This was the first CMS we had at our company so hard to say positive or negative impact.
  • Prior to this CMS there was a static site that html files had to be ftp to a company to have the site updated. So from that standpoint it made updating the site much less expensive.
  • Compared to a tool like Wordpress this is much more secure and easier to manage, but since we outsource that portion of it to the company that built the site we dont realize those gains.

  • Liferay scales well both in terms of performance but also in terms of operational self-service and eases the burden on IT.
  • Compliance, Marketing and Client Engagement teams can create and modify content and submit it for approval. This results in lower operational costs in the areas of new private-label sites and maintenance of current sites because, prior to Liferay, site content management required expensive IT software engineering resources to implement compliance and marketing content changes.
