Very slow and not intuitive; it would be my last choice for version control systems. The UI is a little confusing at times and seems a little outdated. It needs a lot of improvement. It is suited for small projects and fewer number of projects. But if there are huge projects and many projects to be maintained in a portfolio, its a little hard to manage.

Bitbucket

Bitbucket works really well with Jira and Atlassian ecosystem. If you are in the Atlassian ecosystem, definitely consider Bitbucket as your version control repository. Bitbucket shines in code review process and also in pull requests. It is easy for users to get used to. If you are doing CI/CD and pipeline, you'll like Bitbucket also.

Pros

AccuRev

  • One place for most recent code with history, avoid any conflict/confusion among other team/members.
  • Stream/Workflow approach to control approval process betwen all the teams, which I couldn't find in other version control tools I worked.
  • Bundle our code in a small group (called, Issues in Accurev) to differentiate between different projects.

Bitbucket

  • Very easy to integrate with other DevOps tools like Jenkins and with project/workflow management tools like JIRA.
  • Very efficient in managing security and compliance standards for code, especially during pull requests, merge requests, branching, etc.
  • Very robust in performance, especially the cloud and datacenter versions hardly hit any performance issues and supports more than 2000+ developers in my company.

Cons

AccuRev

  • Ability to zoom in/out for stream-view. We currently have many streams/substreams and unable to view the entire workflow. Zooming in/out would benefit.
  • Being a designer, I use Adobe Flash and SWF files. When updating the SWF files, Accurev does not see these files as being changed and you will be unable to promote. In order to push changes, you must totally rename the SWF file.

Bitbucket

  • The code management UI is a bit rough around the edges and difficult to work with.
  • BitBucket does not have the same simplified PR management tools as other competitors.
  • It's not as easy to integrate 3rd party apps as other competitors.

There isn't another similar product that I would be able to find that would meet all of these needs without me implementing my own self-hosted service locally on premises that was accessible to off-site team members. For the cost, this is one of the services that you just can't find a way to get rid of. It's incredibly affordable and incredibly beneficial.

The architecture of Bitbucket makes it more easily scalable than other source code management repositories. Also, administration and maintaining the instance is very easy. It integrates with JIRA and other CI/CD applications which makes it more useful to reduce the efforts. It supports multiple plugins and those bring a lot of extra functionality. It increases the overall efficiency and usefulness of Bitbucket.

The customer support provided by Atlassian (Bitbucket's parent company that also makes Jira, Confluence, etc.) is very helpful. They seem to be very concerned about any issues reported with their products and even just questions about functionality. They are constantly improving the products with new features in nearly every release. Plus they have a plethora of online documentation to reference.

Alternatives Considered

AccuRev

In my view, accurev ranks very low compared to other tools I have used. Microsoft TFS is the best in the industry as of today as it's a complete ALM solution. It does code version, bug tracking, user story documentation, and has easy integration with other external tools supporting many languages. So I would definitely recommend TFS to anyone.

Bitbucket

Bitbucket excels at providing loads of customizability and a comprehensive suite of tools for the development life cycle. But it does it by adding a lot of complexity that has to be managed by someone (or some people). Competitors like GitHub and Gitlab are a little leaner. GitHub takes a more "do one thing well" approach and lets you extend it easily with other apps, which can be extremely useful and flexible for some organizations. But for some (especially larger organizations) so much interfacing with 3rd party applications won't be allowed or will meet with resistance. Gitlab is more in between, offering a fuller grouping of tools than GitHub, but with much less of the complexity of bitbucket/Atlassian. It is, however, the less mature of the 3, but it is improving.

Return on Investment

AccuRev

  • Better team coordination.
  • Avoid confusion by having one place for all documentation and code.
  • Better project management by having different work streams.

Bitbucket

  • Adopting Bitbucket made a big change in our organization by having all departments migrate to this from SVN and GitHub, and therefore we unified the processes for file versioning, code review, and pull requests across the company (100+ people using Bitbucket)
  • Due to the Bitbucket-JIRA integration, now we can track all issues with their corresponding release version of the code. This is of a great value when you need to track back changes already released to production.
  • Due to Bitbucket-Bamboo integration, we were able to set up automated deployments to QA and production environments that reduced the hustle, the issues with IT and the time spent on deployments, that we have had for many years.
