Very slow and not intuitive; it would be my last choice for version control systems. The UI is a little confusing at times and seems a little outdated. It needs a lot of improvement. It is suited for small projects and fewer number of projects. But if there are huge projects and many projects to be maintained in a portfolio, its a little hard to manage.

If you are a small company with only a handful of endpoints and servers SCCM is not for you. SCCM would create far more problems than it would solve. If you are a medium to large company spread out over multiple sites SCCM would be the answer to your configuration management problems

Pros

  • One place for most recent code with history, avoid any conflict/confusion among other team/members.
  • Stream/Workflow approach to control approval process betwen all the teams, which I couldn't find in other version control tools I worked.
  • Bundle our code in a small group (called, Issues in Accurev) to differentiate between different projects.

  • Windows deployment is probably the biggest strength in my opinion. You can build and capture an operating system image, deploy it using as complex a task sequence as you want. The functionality can be combined with that of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. A deployment can be Zero-Touch all the way to a fully managed sequence.
  • Update management is very good combined with WSUS.
  • The distributed model of SCCM makes it good for ensuring WAN links aren't overutilized.

Cons

  • Ability to zoom in/out for stream-view. We currently have many streams/substreams and unable to view the entire workflow. Zooming in/out would benefit.
  • Being a designer, I use Adobe Flash and SWF files. When updating the SWF files, Accurev does not see these files as being changed and you will be unable to promote. In order to push changes, you must totally rename the SWF file.

  • Further work could be done on the software and application deployment side.
  • The ability to view the logs from the same console would make a lot of sense.

I give it this rating because I found an alternate application that is much more cost effective and quicker

Alternatives Considered

Git is one obvious alternative. However, Git is leveraging the command line and has minimal interface. Developer must be acclimated with command line in order to use Git.

Microsoft SCCM was preferred to others basically because of its great after sale support offered by Microsoft.
Also because it answered all our queries and more.

Return on Investment

  • We will be moving away from Accurev as it's not meeting our needs.
  • We have been using it for many years and it has supported our needs well for these years . But since our org is growing and the projects getting more complex and team size is increasing, this tool is not working out for us.
  • It's a little simpler to understand than GIT but still the slowness of the tool overall is an issue.

  • Compliance with baselines has been made very clear.
  • It is relatively easy to produce clear and well formatted reports.
  • Assigning applications to users or groups makes management very easy.
